Meaning of MTB-MLE
-is education in several languages based on the mother tongue.
-The beginning language of teaching and learning is mother tongue.

-Sec.4 of R.A 10533(Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. "Languages first learned by child, which he/she identifies with, is identified as a native language user of by others, which he/she knows best, or uses most."
As of 2014, DepEd has 19 major local languages
Tagalog, Kapampangan, Pangasinense, Iloko, Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray, Tausug, Maguindanaoan, Maranao, Chabacano, Ybanag, Ivatan, Sambal, Aklanon, Kinaray-a, Yakan and Surigaonon.

DepEd Curriculum Guide of MTB-MLE states:

"Use Mother Tongue appropriately and effectively in oral, visual and written communication in a variety of situations and for a variety of audiences, contexts and purposes including learning other content subjects and languages,

and take pride in one's cultural heritage."
