As a professional you must be able to recognize which nail conditions you can treat or cosmetically improve, or which ones are to be referred to a physician.
if the area to be worked on is inflamed, infected, broken or swollen, it should be referred to a physician
EFFECT: dark purplish spot, usually due to injury
TREATMENT: treat gently and avoid pressure

Nails that turn a variety of colors may indicate surface staining, a systemic disorder, or poor blood circulation

TREATMENT
Frequent manicures
Care of hardened cuticle

split or brittle nails with lengthwise ridges
CAUSES
injury to the matrix
excessive use of cuticle solvents, cleaning agents and polish removers, aggresive filing and hereditery
TREATMENT
only perform on nails that aren't split and nail bed that isn't performed
conditioning treatments and hot oil manicures
PLICATURED NAIL

CAUSE
injury to the matrix
heredity
often leads to ingrown nails

NAIL PTERYGIUM
EFFECT
abnormal condition where skin is stretched by the nail plate
CAUSE
injury from burns or adverse skin reactions
damage to hyponychium and eponychium
TREATMENT
DO NOT PUSH BACK SKIN WITH ANY KIND OF INSTRUMENT. IT MAY CAUSE MORE DAMAGE
massage with cuticle creams or conditioners

RIDGES
Run vertically down the length of the natural nail plate; caused by uneven growth of nails; usually result of age
CAUSE

Buff the nail
use ridge filler with colored polish to give a smooth look

Nail plates with deep or sharp curvature at the free edge; the greater the curve of the matrix, the greater the curvature of the free edge will be.
