Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS)

BICS are the language skills that we use in everyday social interactions such as engaging in conversation with our family and friends. These skills usually take six months to two years to develop after ELL students arrive in the United States. (Haynes)
Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP)
CALP refers to the learning that occurs within a classroom setting. Haynes states that this process takes five to seven years. If an English Language Learner has experienced no prior schooling, this process can take upward to ten years. Language acquisition requires more than memorizing vocabulary; it requires the skill to analyze, to compare, to contrast, to interact.
Common Underlying Proficiency (CULP/CUP)

Common Underlying Proficiency is a set of skills that a child learns while acquiring his first language. These skills can then be applied to his secondary language, in turn, making it easier to learn. (UK Essays 2013)

Task Difficulty
"Tasks range in difficulty along one continuum from cognitively undemanding to cognitively demanding; and along another continuum from context-embedded to context-reduced." (UK Essays 2013)
