Transcript of Irony

Today we are going to talk about Irony and the different types of Irony. And how the author uses irony in Harrison Bergeron.

Verbal Irony
Dramatic Irony
Situational Irony

Verbal Irony
When a person says one thing, but means the opposite. Sarcasm is a form of verbal irony.
Dramatic Irony
when the audience knows more about a situation than the character(s).
Situational irony
Verbal Irony In Harrison Bergeron.
"And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear."(vonnegut, pg1)

This is a form of verbal irony because the meaning of
handicapped in the story is the opposite of the meaning we use today. In Harrison Bergeron handicapped means to be normal, intelligent, beautiful, free, graceful and pretty. However the meaning of handicapped is a physical or mental disability
"I am the Emperor! cried Harrison. 'Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once! ' He stamped his foot and the studio shook." (Vonnegurt, pg4)
This is verbal irony because he is not the emperor. He is just seeking attention. And wants power and revenge. He is also just standing up for himself.
"It became their obvious intention to kiss the ceiling. They kissed it . (vonnegut, pg5)
This is verbal irony because they didn't actually kiss the ceiling. They are dancing so passionate that they are floating.
Dramatic irony in Harrison
"I forget," she said. "Something real sad on television... It's all kind of mixed up in my mind," said Hazel (Vonnegut, pg 6)
we all know what happened in the television they killed Harrison but because hazel has a short memory she couldn't remember what happened in the television that made her cry.
The year was 2081, and everybody was equal. they weren't only equal before god and the law. they were equal every which way. nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else... (Vonnegut, pg 1).
in this paragraph its a dramatic irony because the government thinks that they're making the right discussion and everyone is equal but we as readers don't think that its equal because beautiful and smart people re handicapped while the ugly people aren't beautiful people cant change their looks and their smartness its in them but the government wont listen to them because they think that they're doing the right thing and nobody will disagree.

Examples of Irony
Saying “Oh, fantastic!” when the situation is actually very poor.
This car goes as fast as a Huffy bicycle.
As sunny as day in winter in Alaska
- Harrison death was not expected before he send his message, And set the people free from Diana moon cage, and make them strong enough to stand talk for their self ‘s and not be under someone mercy

“ I am a great ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can become what I can become!”
- In this Quote Harrison speaks like
the government. He want to take control of everything. i didn't think that Harrison would do that because he know the felling of being controlled and stepped over.

A fire station burns down
The police station gets robbed
The teacher failed the test
When something not expected happen's
Situational irony in Harrison

“ It was then that Diana Moon clambers the
handicapper general came into the studio with a
double-barreled ten – gauge shotgun. She fired
twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were
dead before thy hit the floor.”(Vonnegut,pg.5)

“ She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous.”
- It wasn’t expected that beautiful people
should hide their beauty. It was expected
that they would show off their beauty.
"Transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains."
This is situational irony because when we have someone brave we use them for our communities advantage. However here they handicapped them and locked them up.
"Since the announcer, like all announcers, had a serious speech impediment."
This is situational irony because you expect an announcer to have a clear and understood voice. however in the story the announcer has problems speaking.
Examples of Dramatic Irony
In a scary movie, the character walks into a house and the audience knows the killer is in the house.
In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo thinks Juliet is dead and the audience knows she is not.
