Aquaponics Aquaponics- is the symbiotic cultivation of plants and aquatic animals in a recirculation environment Purpose of Aquaponics- To filter the water in a fish tank. It uses plants to take the minerals out of the water from the wastes of fish. How it Aquaponics works- "Nitrifying bacteria, which naturally live in the soil, water and air, convert ammonia first to nitrite and then to nitrate which plants consume. In an Aquaponics system the heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria will attach to the tank walls, underside of the rafts, organic matter, the growing medium (if used) and in the water column. The beneficial bacteria discussed here are natural and will inhabit an Aquaponics system as soon as ammonia and nitrite are present. " The species of fish that you would use and the reason that you chose it.
•Goldfish- Cheap, easily replaced, could have more then one in a tank
•Catfish- Extravagant fish, easily replaced, stay small for numerous years, could be eaten if they grow too big or die.
•Coi- Pretty much larger Goldfish.
•Crayfish- Easily caught, easily replaced, fascinating, can clean up after itself.
Best fish species for Aquaponics- Barramundi, Catfish, Carp, Goldfish, Jade Perch, Coi, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Tilapia, Trout, and Crayfish. The species of plants that you would use and the reason that you chose it.-
•Tomato Plants- Produce tomatoes, cheap, easily replaced.
•Herbs- Produce herbs, can have more then one species.
•Strawberry Plant- Produce strawberry’s, easy to maintain, cheap.
Temperature requirements- Requirements depend on the type of fish. Some fish require slow moving cold water, others require warm still water. Filtration needed- Use a normal fish filter to filter water into a PVC pipe, which carries the water to the desired destination. Two Proposed Designs Pump (water volume that they would move) - “A 500 G.H.P. pump moves the water up to the eight NFT troughs at the "head" of the system.”
