Simon's House
"But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."
1 Timothy 1:5
The Goal
The Purpose of the Law
“the unholy and irreligious” – No other gods, no idols, taking His name in vain, Sabbath holy
“those who kill their fathers or mothers” – Honor your father and mother
“for murderers” – You shall not kill
“for adulterers and homosexuals” – You shall not commit adultery
“for slave traders” (kidnappers) – You shall not steal
“and liars and perjurers” – You shall not bear false witness
“and for whatever else is contrary to healthy doctrine” – You shall not covet, etc.
The Problem
"...some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions."
1 Timothy 1:6-7
The Law's Gospel
"And Jesus answered him, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' And he replied, 'Say it, Teacher.' 'A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?' Simon answered and said, 'I suppose the one whom he forgave more.' And He said to him, 'You have judged correctly.'"
Luke 7:40-43
"Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."
Luke 7:44-47
“There was already a deep black wordless conviction
in him that the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin.”
Flannery O’Connor,
Wise Blood
"But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners...."
1 Timothy 1:8-9
"For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise."
Psalm 51:16-17
"...and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me."
1 Timothy 1:10-11
