By: Bryce Miller THE SPACE RACE 1950's 1960's 1970's 1990's 1980's 2000's That's All Folks US US US US US Soviets The Soviets start the space race on Oct. 4 1957 with Sputnik 1.
The Soviets then make Luna 1 which is the first craft to orbit the moon The US follows Jan. 31, 1958 with
Explorer 1
Then in Oct. 1, 1958 we form NASA
to continue the space race. US Soviets The Soviets started the 60's with the first man in space on April 12, 1961 named Yuri Gargarin on Vostok 1. Then June 16, 1963 first woman in space. May 5, 1961 shortly after the first man in space we launch Alan Shepard, the 1st american in space.
Then December 14, 1962 US Mariner 2 is the 1st craft to fly by Venus Soviets May 30, 1971 Mariner 9 is the 1st craft to view Mars.
July 30, 1971 David Scott and James Irwin test out 1st moon rover.
Then March 2, 1972 Pioneer 10 is the 1st craft to see Jupiter. The Soviets at this time didn't really do much because they already did it. Soviets On April 12, 1981 Columbia takes its 1st manned mission
Then Jan. 28, 1986 the shuttle Challenger explodes after liftoff. May 13, 1982 a Soviet team is the 1st to inhabit space station
Feb. 20, 1986 the core of the space station is launched Soviets November 19, 1996 is when Columbia set a world record for the longest lasting shuttle in space. October 15, 1997 the U.S sends probe to Saturn. The same date Columbia set the record it goes into flight again with the first Ukrainian astronaut aboard. The soviets had been blown out of the sky and now they are just sitting and watching as the US does more and more. February was a sad day for the US. Columbia had just exploded on its enterance to the atmosphere, everyone died. July 8, 2011 the last space shuttle to ever fly, Atlantis, is now found in the Kennedy space center in Florida Soviets The space race is over the US has won and now we are doing stuff just for the fun of it.
