Language Development Introduction Five Key Criteria 1.Language studied cannot be the student’s best language
2.Minimum duration is 50 hours
3.School administers the LD
4.Student produces a language portfolio
5.The school ensures satisfactory LD course completion and advises the IB an extension of a diploma course in groups 1 or 2
a non-diploma course designed by the school for further development of a student's additional language
a self-study course monitored by the school
an online course The language development course can be: The ab initio course teacher provides an extension course
The extension course is comprised of a 4th theme
The student must satisfactorily complete this 4th theme Example 1 – A student is studying the DP French ab initio course and wishes to study French for her LD the language teacher provides an extension course
the extension course is comprised of the 6th topic
the student satisfactorily completes this 6th topic Example 2: A student studying the Spanish Language B at either SL or HL wishes to study Spanish for his LD Extension a language teacher provides an extension English course
the extension course comprises of a suitable topic
the student satisfactorily completes the extension course Example 3: A student whose best language is Spanish would benefit from the further development of English the student/language teacher finds a suitable online language course
the teacher regularly checks on the students progress
the student satisfactorily completes the online course Example 4: A student wants to do their LD online due to time constraints the language teacher designs a suitable LD course
the teacher delivers the LD course
the students satisfactorily complete the LD course Example 5: The school wants to offer its own LD course for its IBCC students the language teacher provides or checks the suitability of the intended self-study course
the student's progress is monitored by the teacher
the student satisfactorily completes the LD self-study course Example 6: The student wants to do LD as a self-study course the student completes a Language Portfolio
the teacher advises the IBCC coordinator of the students’ satisfactory completion of LD
