Civil War Battles Fort Sumter The fort is best known as the site upon which the shots initiating the American Civil War were fired, at the Battle of Fort Sumter Named after General Thomas Sumter, A Revolutionary War hero Fort Sumter was built following the War of 1812 1st Bull Run fought on July 21, 1861, near Manassas, Virginia It was the first major land battle of the American Civil War. Just months after the start of the war at Fort Sumter, the Northern public clamored for a march against the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, which could bring an early end to the war. Antietam Fought on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland It The first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties
