Puppies & Dogs
By Ben Carver
7th period
May 2013 Picture Dogs are know as a man's best friend. There are hundreds of breeds including both mixed breeds and purebred. Millions of dogs live as family pets around the world. Puppies Puppies are baby dogs. They are born blind and also deaf. It takes about 2-3 weeks till they can see and hear. During their blindness and loss of hearing puppies rely on their mother and other senses. Feeding Puppies need to be fed twice a day while dogs only need to be fed once a day. Too much food could make a dog or a puppy overweight though. Sizes Puppies and dogs come in all sizes, from as small as 6 inches to as tall as 8ft 3 in. For an example, a chihuahua can fit in a purse but a Great Dane definitely could not. Weights Dogs range from as light as 2lb to as heavy as 343lb. Brandy is the dog who holds the world record for world's lightest dog weighing 2 pounds and Zorba is the dog who holds the record for world's heaviest dog weighing 343 pounds! Famous puppies and dogs Just like humans, dogs/puppies can be famous and/or popular. Whether real or cartoons, dogs and puppies have been known to be very famous TV and movie stars. Check out these next cool dogs! Eddie Eddie is a Jack Russel Terrier who's in the comedy series "Fraiser". The dog's real name is Moose. Benji Benji is the dog starred in the popular movie "Benji: Off the leash". Surprisingly, Benji is a female dog. Snoopy Snoopy is a cartoon character popularly known from "The Peanuts". Snoopy also starred in "The Red Baron" as the fly boy. Underdog Underdog is also a famous animated character known as a fictional super canine. Underdog always talked in rhymes on his show that lasted for 9 whole years until finally closing. Rin Tin Tin was also one of the first canine stars. Rin Tin Tin was rescued from the trenches in another country and brought to the USA by a world war 1 pilot. Later on Rin Tin Tin became a TV star, signed contracts with his paw print and was featured in "Where the North begins"1925. Rin Tin Tin earned about 5 million dollars and starred in 25 movies. Rin Tin Tin Blair was one of the first canine movie stars. She was featured in "Rescued by Rover" and played the character of Rover. Blair was a female collie. Blair Lassie was a male Collie who was probably one of the most famous dogs out there at the time. Lassie was in many movies, shows and books. Lassie Goofy is a cartoon character that plays a role in Walt Disney productions "Mickey Mouse". He is a dog who is a friend to Mickey mouse, the main character. Goofy is a goof who is funny, not so smart, and usually says the word "Gwarsh" a lot. Goofy Dogs can be put into one of eight groups depending on their types and abilities. Check each group out! The 8 dog groups The sporting group is made up of some of the most popular breeds including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniets. In fact, the golden retriever and the Labrador are responsible for almost 1/4 of more than 1 million dogs in the AKC (American kennel club) every year. All these sporting dogs are used as helpers for the disabled, for hunting, for family, and bomb/drug sniffers for cops. Sporting group The non-sporting group is composed of the outcast breeds that didn't fit in anywhere else. They are mostly used as home dogs. The bulldog is an example of a non-sporting breed. It is a stay home dog but also has meaning in England. The bulldog is England's symbol because it represents determination and strength. It is not so popular anymore though. Also, poodles are one of the most popular breeds in the non-sporting group. Non-sporting group The Herding Group is made of some breeds that work as sheep dogs, cattle dogs, and hunting dogs. The most famous breeds in this group are the Corgis and the Collies who round up the animals by running fast, making eye contact, and barking. Herding group The Hound group is made up of the original hunting dogs. The hounds are great at hunting because their amazing scenting ability and OK speed . Hounds such as blood hounds are often used to track fugitives or missing people by police. Hound group The working group is composed of the Akita, Komondor, Portuguese Waterdog, Newfound land, Saint Bernard, Alaskan Malamute, Bernese Mountain Dog and many other breeds. The dogs in this group are used as live stock and property guards, police dogs, sled dogs and rescue dogs. The working dogs are chosen for these jobs because their strength, abilities, and brains. Working group Some Terriers in this group such as the Airedale Terrier are used as watchdogs. That is because they are feisty and tough. But some are stubborn, some dangerous, and some hard to keep control of. For example, if you mixed a bulldog and a terrier you would have a highly dangerous dog. Terrier group The toy group is the group of small breeds, such as a pug, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, and the hypo- allergenic Schnoodle. These toys are just the smaller versions of bigger breeds. Like the toy poodle is pretty much the small version of the non sporting poodle. Toy group Mixed breeds are not purebred. They are known as mutts because they are composed of more than one breed. To make a mixed breed you combine two or more purebreds to create a mix. Most countries' dog populations are mixed breeds. Mixed breeds
