Samantha Hough Giuseppe Garibaldi Born: July 4,1807 in Nice, French Empire Garibaldi was a Italian Patriot and Soldier of the Risorgimento Through his conquest of Sicily and Naples with his Guerrilla Redshirts, contributed to the achievement of Italian unification Garibaldi and his family was one with fisherman and local traders He was a sailor for more than 10 years In 1832 he acquired a masters certificate as a merchant caption. He had come to the influence of Giuseppe Mazzini, the prophet of italian nationalism, and the French thinker the Comte de Saint-Salmon By 1833-1834 Garibaldi served in the navy of the kingdom on Piedmont-Sardinia Died: June 2, 1882 in Caprera, Italy Garibaldi in 1834 took part in a mutiny intended to provoke a republican revolution in Piedmont , but the plan failed. He escaped to France and in his absence was commend to death by a Genoese Court Giuseppe was order to seize a warship but the plot was discovered by police He was condemned to death, he escaped to South America, where he lived for 12 years. He displayed unusual qualities of military leadership while participating in the revolt of Rio Grande do Sul against Brazil In 1848 he traveled in the United Sates and settled in Staten Island and later became a US citizen During 1848 he traveled back to Italy and participation the movement for Italian unification This was called the Risorgimento, Italian for "revival" He was unsuccessful again in 1854 he settled down in the island of Caprera, by this he had formed a alliance with Victor Emmanuel II With his new popularity he gained alliance of thousands of Italians His dream of uniting Italy motivated his successful expedition against the Austrian forces in 1860 he conquered Sicily and set up a provisional insular government. Giuseppe then conquered Naples, which he then delivered to Victor Emmanuel in 1861 and returned to Caprera With the annexation of Umbria from the papal government, it lead Italy to be established in 1861 as Victor Emmanuel as its king. The Italian kingdom was still missing Rome, which was still in papal possession, and Venice was still controlled by the Austrians Vince was added to Italy in 1866 after Prussia defeated Austria in the Seven Weeks War, Italy sided with Prussia, so as there rewarded they got Venice in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, Napoleon III withdrew his troops from Rome , so Rome was left unprotected. Rome voted for union with Italy in October 1870, in July 1571 Rome became the capital of Italy Motivations Find a liberal system of government for Italy Become a leader to men who shared his ideals But ultimately the establishment of a unified Italy Son of Domenico Giuseppe Married a girl named Antia, they married in 1842 Had 3 Children together "i offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor food; I offer hunger, thirst, and forced marches, battles and death.
