Shifts Math Common Core State Standards
Shifts Rather than teaching "how to get the answer," concepts are and understood and applied to new situations. 1: Focus 2:Coherence 3: Fluency Speed and accuracy with simple calculations, so that students are able to manipulate more complex concepts. Spiraled curriculum, where each standard is not a new event, but an extension of previous learning. Narrowed, deeper scope in order to build a strong foundational knowledge where skills can be transferred across concepts and grades. 4: Deep Understanding 5: Application Students can choose the appropriate concept for application, even when not prompted. Teachers provide opportunities for application to "real world" situations. 6: Dual Intensity Students are practicing and understanding. Opportunities are provided to participate in skill drills, as well as to apply concepts in varied settings. Why do I need to spend time on fact fluency???? -Students are able to apply their knowledge,
-Students are able to complete problems quickly.
-Students have the confidence in math.
-It does not take much time.
-It is not just basic facts. Standards by grade level
Kindergarten- Fluently add and subtract within 5.
1st Grade- Fluently add and subtract within 10.
2nd Grade- Fluently add and subtract within 100
3rd Grade- Fluently add and subtract within 1000 ( using strategies and algorithms)
Fluently multiply and divide within 100.
4th Grade – Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers (1,000,000)
Multiply whole numbers 4 digit by 1 and two two digit numbers.
5th Grade- Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers and decimals
