DEVELOPMENT PHASES
Male’ Decongestion Challenges
The population of Male’, needs dissemination as carrying capacity on the island for a reasonable lifestyle has been exceeded.
Greater Male’ Region
Development

Land reclamation is initiated to pay for the construction of bridges connecting Hulhu-Male’ and Vili-Male to Male.
A STRATEGIC FEASIBILITY AND TECHNICAL STUDY WILL BE ESSENTIAL FOR A PROJECT OF THIS MAGNITUDE. THE STUDY WILL INVOLVE THE FOLLOWING:
The population does not have the critical mass to cost effectively provide for itself services which are municipal or commercial.
Male’ South-West Harbor Expansion
Male’ Southwest harbor is currently unable to cope with the demand. The narrow lagoon which exists between the breakwater (tripods) and the sea wall was never meant to be a part of the harbor.

Male’ South Reclamation
Vili-Male’ Reclamation Project
Reasons for Relocation
Building fixed link bridge to connect Male’ and Vili-Male’
Proposed Solutions
Insufficient harbor space
Heavy Industrial work
Apartment shortages
Workshops and Storage all over Male’
Expansion of Harbor
Expansion of Villi-Male’
Relocation of workshops and warehouses
Male’ South-West Harbor Expansion
Bridge between Vili-Male’ and Male’
Vili-Male’ Reclamation Project

Of the reclaimable area, 5.69 hectares (600,000 sq. ft.) are proposed to be reclaimed on the southern side.
The reclaimed area is for light industrial usage and warehouses.
Depth survey charts of the surrounding waters of Male’ shows that there are large area’s which can still be reclaimed
A Google aerial view shows that the harbor can be enlarged by repositioning the tripods from its existing locations
To make the community viable, the population has to be increased.
The lagoon in Vili-Male’ has not yet been reclaimed. Large reclaimable areas exist.
Through reclamation, the island will more than double in size.
Reclamation will allow for the building of better housing, and allocation of land for light industries (necessary to provide local employment) recreational areas etc.
A. Deciding on the type of bridges and connection points and design.
B. Feasibility of entire project.
C. Ascertaining a more definitive cost estimates for the projects
D. Ascertaining the best type of shore retention.
E. Feasibility on the enlargement of the Southwest harbor and ascertaining cost.
F. Estimating the project duration.
G. Advising of funding options.
LOAN REPAYMENTS CAN BE MADE THROUGH THE SALE OF LAND WHICH HAS BEEN RECLAIMED.
Estimated amount to build the bridge from Male’ to Vili-Male’ is about USD 80 – 100 Million
Funds have to be found to do both projects as the bridge to Villi-Male’ can be started before the land reclamation is complete. This is due to the fact that the bridge to Hulhule will start on existing land.
MVR 5 million seed money is needed to start the project.
