Transcript of Richard Nixon (1969-1974)

Salvador Allende
The president of Chile from 1970 to 1973, Allende was the first communist president in Latin America elected through open elections.
Augusto Pinochet
Following Allende's deposition and death, Pinochet became the dictator of a military junta that controlled Chile from 1973 to 1990.
USA Involvement
Though in 2000 it was denied that the country had any direct involvement in the coup, many historians have upheld that the USA actively sought to destabilise the Chilean government under Allende. Additionally, the USA had attempted to begin a coup in 1970.
The coup d'état
On 11 September 1973, General Pinochet brought the armed forces and national police together to overthrow Allende, who then (likely) committed suicide within the presidential palace, as he had vowed not to leave.
Beware CIA influence!
Was the USA losing influence by the mid-1970s?
Yes. In the Western Hemisphere, and especially Latin America, the USA was slowly becoming less of an overarching power as Latin American countries broke free of totalitarian regimes and formed their own governments.
Rockefeller Report
Further implicating the USA in certain cases involving possible CIA participation, the Rockefeller Report was released in 1975. Much of the report detailed various abuses committed by the CIA, such as mail interception and openings.
Richard Nixon (1969-1974)
Nalani Brown, Karen Guerra, and Ramon Romero
Implications
In failing to set up a regime that could be influenced, the USA did not achieve its goal of having further influence over Chile. The same occurred in many Latin American countries, such as Guatemala.
