Japan 17nth January 1995 Science The past and the Future Photos Images were from the Encyclopedia Britannica. By Aleksandra Higson Faults In the past, many earthquakes have happened in Japan. This is because it is right on a tectonic plate boundary. The Kobe earthquake was created because of the Eurasian and the Philippine plates. There are thousands of tiny earthquakes everyday, but they are so small that we don't notice them. These have a magnitude of about one to three. Human impact: The Kobe Earthquake The Kobe Earthquake Faults are when the edges of tectonic plates rub together and get stuck creating a weak point in the Earths crust. This is where most earthquakes occur. Measuring Earthquakes To measure earthquakes, scientists use an instrument called a seismograph. It measures the seismic waves produced by an earthquake.

The Richter scale is different. It is the actual scale (a number from one to ten) that measures the amount of damage an earthquake causes. It is also called the magnitude. One at tiny and ten at almost everyone in the area will die. The Kobe earthquake was a seven point two. That means it was pretty big earthquake and caused lots of damage. Plate Boundary The Kobe earthquake was created on a destructive plate boundary. That is when an oceanic plate and a continental plate collide. Therefore the thinner oceanic plate is forced under the continental plate due to it's higher density. As the oceanic plate seeps down, it gradually melts because it is warmer under the ground. It is the most expensive, costing 200 billion dollars. To rebuild houses. In the future, many more will occur and we can not do anything about it. Earthquakes have happened long before human kind and will continue to happen after. The Great Han shin Earthquake is another name for The Kobe Earthquake. Pavements cracked At 5:46 A.M. Buildings caught on fire. Houses collapsed More than six thousand people died. The quake hit just twenty miles from Kobe. This caused nearly two hundred thousand buildings to collapse.
