Shadow Puppets
Translucent materials allow light, but not detailed images to pass through. Color tissue paper, sunglasses, stained glass windows, and some plastics are examples of translucency.

We can see through some objects. Clear water, glass windows, and clear plastic containers allow light to travel through. These objects and materials are transparent. Transparent materials allow light to pass through so that objects behind it can be seen clearly.

Do you think transparent objects and materials can make a shadow? Try experimenting with some transparent papers and objects.

Making Shadows
Let's try making some shadows! The overhead projector will be our light, your hands will be the object, and the white screen is our surface.

What happens when you move your hands closer to the light? Away from the light?
Can you make your fingers look longer and shorter than they really are?
What color is the spoon's shadow?
Why does the color of the shadow change?
Creating Shadows
Three things are needed to make a shadow: a light, an object, and a surface. For example sunlight shines on a child standing on the sidewalk, a shadow is made on the sidewalk in front of the child. The child's body blocks the sunlight and makes a shadow.

The sun is the light, the child is the object, and the sidewalk is the surface.
Opaque
Because our hands are solid, no light can travel through them. Our hands block all the light and create a shadow.

Objects that do not allow any light to pass through them are opaque.
We can use what we know about shadows and opaque, transparent, and translucent materials to help us create shadow puppets.

The basic elements of shadow puppetry have been the
same for almost 2000 years: a light, a screen, and
something to put between them to cast a shadow.
The art form began in India and China. Puppets were
very elaborate figures carved from leather and
projected on a cotton cloth screen.*

How to Make a Shadow Puppet
Decide what your character will be.
Sketch a plan for the character. The best
way to see a character in a shadow play
is in profile (from the side).
Step 2
Redraw the puppet on opaque black paper. Stiff paper like tag board works best. Carefully cut it out. Cut openings for the facial features.
Step 3
Add details by trimming some parts with edger scissors or make designs with hole punchers.
Step 4
Cover some of the openings with transparent or translucent color papers. Tape or glue them on the back of the puppet but be careful not to overlap the tape on an opening.
Step 5
Glue a thin dowel or bamboo skewer on the back of your puppet. Now you are ready to put on a play!
