Build locations on 6 continents. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry aimed at helping low-income families by providing them with a safe place to live ("Quick Tour"). What Is It? Special Publicity In 1984, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, went on their first Habitat work trip and sparked interest in Habitat's work across the nation ("The history of Habitat").
Some current celebrities who have shown their support to Habitat for Humanity include U2, Kayne West, Jennifer Aniston, Green Day, Shakira, Neil Diamond, Bon Jovi, Ricky Martin and many more ("Habitat For Humanity Celebrity Supporters & Events"). A world where everyone has a decent place to live ("Habitat for Humanity fact sheet (frequently asked questions)"). What Do They Want? How Do You Get a Home? Families who are in need of a home apply to a local Habitat affiliate ("Habitat for Humanity fact sheet (frequently asked questions)").
The local affiliate then selects homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program, and their ability to repay the loan.
The loans are used to buy more supplies and resources to build the next home. How Does Homelessness Affect You? Around the world, about 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless ("Why Habitat for Humanity is needed").
95 million people in the United States have housing problems.
A clean house is needed to prevent and care for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Disaster Response So far, over 50,000 families have been helped with Habitat's Disaster Response program ("Habitat for Humanity's Disaster Response").
They offer advice as well as housing assistance to individuals who have been devastated by a natural disaster. It was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller ("The history of Habitat").
After a successful lifestyle in Alabama, the Fullers' went to Georgia to live a life filled with Christian service.
While in GA, they visited a Koinonia farm and got the idea of partnership housing (working with volunteers to build houses).
After enjoying their time building houses for individuals who were not able to afford it, they went to the Democratic Republic of Congo and tried to get housing for at least 2,000 people. After 3 years, their goal was complete, and they moved back to the U.S.
In the U.S. they joined with their supporters and created Habitat for Humanity International.
Since being first created, Habitat for Humanity has helped build over 500,000 homes and shelter more than 2.5 million individuals. Who Do They Help? parents
