WITCHCRAFT, WICCA, AND SPELLS
Transcript of WITCHCRAFT, WICCA, AND SPELLS
• At the end of the medieval period emerged a definition of a witch as a diabolic person in league with the devil.
1000-1500= Witch-hunting manual,
called the Malleus Malleficarum.
"No one does more harm to the Catholic faith than midwives".
1500-1700= Big persecution.
82% of victims were women.
The liberal tradition: There are not witches!!!
The Margaret Murray tradition: Ancient fertility religion (god Dianus).
The social history
view: Witch accusations.
History of ideas school: concepts developed over the centuries.
Anne Barstow: women's history (social and sexual violence against women)
Thousands of years ago very few people knew about illnesses, and medicine. But, some women discovered healing herbs, and other types of homeopathic treatments.
These women helped a lot of sick people, and worked as midwives, using plant-based medicines.
But, at that time, the church believed that all healing must be done only through men in the church.
So, when the churchmen found out that those women were healing others, they felt angry.
Later, the Church acussed those women of witchcraft, heresy, devil worship and black magic.
According to the Church, those women were supposedly performing black magic rituals.
And those accused of practicing witchcraft were executed as punishment.
But, the truth is that religious men did not like the idea of a woman being "intelligent".
1691= Betty and Abigail suffered a strange illness. The doctors at that time did not know what was wrong with the girls. So, they thought that they had an evil spell on them.
A woman named Tibuta, and another woman named Sarah Osborne, were accused by the girls of casting a spell on them.
So that, Tibuta and Sarah were executed for supposedly practicing witchcraft.
("witches" were burned alive while tied to a stake or by hanging).
1692= persecutions began to weaken and almost ended.
But, nowadays a lot of people have been pursuit for supposedly being witches.
2012, Kenya, Africa.
a woman and two men were accused of witchcraft.
They were pursuit, hit with machetes, and burned alive by their own families.
Relatives are the suspects in almost all of the killings. But no one has tried to stop this massacre.
The image of a witch as and old, ugly, hook-nosed woman, making potions inside a cauldron is a myth.
BUT NOT FOR FLY!!!

At the end of the recording there is only silence.
From there, they never returned, and a year later, their recording was found.
But, two of the students disappeared inside the house, and the girl who was recording everything found hersef alone. After a while, she screamed and violently fell down on the floor with her camera.
Three students were making a project about that legend and discovered that Parr was possessed by the spirit of a witch. (The Blair Witch).
