How bad is it really?
-3rd leading cause of teen death
-many adults see bullying as 'just being a kid'
-4,400 deaths per year
-over 14% of high school students have had suicidal thoughts, and 7% have attempted it
-bully victims are 2-9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims
-10-14 yr old girls may even be more of a higher risk
-nearly 30% of students are victims of bullying or bullies themselves
-160,000 kids stay home from school everyday from fear of bullying
What are we doing to stop it?
-take all talk/threats of suicide seriously, get help immediately
-keep weapons and medications away from anyone who may be at risk for suicide
-parents should encourage their teens to talk about bullying
-parents who see serious bullying problems should talk to the school authorities
-signs of depression
sadness, withdrawal from others, losing interest in favorite activities, trouble sleeping/eating
-talking about/showing interest in death or dying
-engaging in dangerous or harmful activities
-saying/expressing things that they cant handle anymore
-making comments, such as 'things will be better without me'
