diversity chart credit U.S. Coast Guard Diversity in the Workplace “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” "...the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety; especially: the inclusion of different types of people." "Diversity is variety. It includes all the characteristics, experiences, and differences of each individual. Diversity can be identified as physical characteristics such as skin color and gender, or it may be differences in culture, skills, education, personality type, or upbringing. Each of these traits brings their own perspective and skills to the workplace." "One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody." “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” There can be no liberty unless there is economic liberty. An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind. 1. Economic growth. 2. A greater share of the consumer market. 3. A more qualified workforce. 4. Avoidance of employee turnover costs. 5. A more creative and innovative workforce. What is the value of a diverse workforce – to the employer, and to the employee? The Art of Community Leaders by example: Questions “As innovation becomes more of a key differentiator for the world’s largest companies, these organizations increasingly see having a diverse and inclusive workforce as critical to driving the creation and execution of new products, services, and business processes” “… Community is a fundamental part of our life on the planet. We thrive when we are immersed in it; suffer when deprived of it, and wherever humans go we create it… We are born into community, and if we’re lucky we’ll end our days surrounded by it.” Link between community and diversity
