Rising Action
Anthem By Ayn Rand
Her Arrival In The U.S
Rand struggled to live in Holywood,California and took odd jobs to make a living.
Working as an extra in a film The King of Kings, she met her future husband Frank O'Connor.
The first screenplay that Rand sold was Red pawn, although it was never produced.
When Equality 7-2521 meets the Golden One, he no longer wants to deny that he prefers some of his peers to others. Because he wants to think about her all the time, and because the urge is so overwhelming, he gives himself to his sin. In so doing, he takes his first major step down the road toward breaking with society.
Climax
Equality presents the lightbulb to the world council and instead of the scholars accepting his gift they react in a way opposite that he hoped. Then they banish him and force him out on his own into the uncharted forest.
Falling Action
Equality starts his new life in the uncharted forest with the golden one. Together they discover the wonders of individualism and finally discover the word I.
Conflict
Resolution
Equality 7-2521 chants his anthem, and speaks about how he and the Golden One will start a new and better society with their incoming newborn. Most importantly he learns the unspeakable word " EGO"
In Anthem Society struggles with Man vs Self conflict where they struggle to find an identity for themselves when individuality is non existent
Symbolism
Light-
Light in anthem represents truth,Equality brings makes light with the invention of his lightbulb. Striking fear into the world council that live without light
Uncharted Forest-
The uncharted forest is a symbol of nature. It's a place where Equality can live naturally and live as he pleases, which he couldn't have done before.
Quotes
1."And if you are not needed by your brother men, there is no reason for you to burden the earth with your bodies.
This quote is the basic principle of society in anthem. Basically saying the humans are a burden on earth and have no reason to live if their no use to others.
2." I wished to know the meaning of things. I am the meaning" Equality finally discovers the word I, and learns that his life's meaning is what he makes of it not what Society decides.
Anthem Card Trivia
3."We are one in all and all in one.
There are no men but only the great WE,
One, indivisible and forever."
The society's motto, that nobody has an identity of their own, but instead have a group identity
4."We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State". Equality tells us that people live to serve the state, and only because of their service to the state that their allowed to live.
More Quotes
5."We do not wonder at this new sin of ours. It is our second Transgression of Preference, for we do not think of all our brothers, as we must, but only of one, and their name is Liberty 5-3000".
Equality Has committed another sin, he prefers one person to others and has fallen in love with Liberty 5-3000/Golden One.

6."International 4-8818 4-8818 and we are friends. This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression, the great Transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men and all men are our friends".
Equality is committing a sin because his society doesn't allow friendship, because it causes individuals to value certain people more then others which is "wrong".

7."So we fought against this curse. We tried to forget our lessons, but we always remembered".
Equality feels guilty for being more intelligent this his brothers, and tryed to become inferior. Sadly for him he's stuck being superior and can't change who he is.
8."We are six feet tall, and this is a burden, for there are not many men who are six feet tall. Ever have the Teachers and the Leaders pointed to us and frowned and said: "There is evil in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers" .Equality is a naturally tall person, which sets himself apart from his peers. This is especially bad because everyone is supposed to be equal, but Equality is set apart from everyone with his strong and tall character

Vocabulary
Transgression- Noun; The act of transgressing; the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone.
Portal- Noun;a grand and imposing entrance (often extended metaphorically).Over the portals of the Palace of the World Council, there are words cut in the marble, which we repeat to ourselves whenever we are tempted:
Mandate-noun; a document giving an official instruction or command. And we were punished when the Council of Vocations came to give us our life Mandates which tell those who reach their fifteenth year what their work is to be for the rest of their days.
Dais- noun;a platform raised above the surrounding level to give prominence to the person on it.And the Council of Vocations sat on a high dais, and they had but two words to speak to each of the Students.

Atone- Verb;turn away from sin or do penitence. We knew we had been guilty, but now we had a way to atone for it. We would accept our Life Mandate, and we would work for our brothers, gladly and willingly, and we would erase our sin against them,
Literary Devices
Anaphora-
"we made it,we created it,we brought it forth from the night of the ages, we alone."
An Anaphora is the repetition of or phrases at the beginning of consecutive lines or sentences.
Simile
"Women work in the fields, and their white tunics in the wind are like the wings of sea-gulls beating over the black soil"
A simile is the comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"
Personification
"Darkness swallowed us"
The attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
Dystopian Society
A dystopian society is an imaginary society that is as dehumanizing and unpleasant as possible
If I would consider any country a dystopian society it would be North Korea. The fact that everyone is "happy" and "equal" reminds me alot of what happens in Anthem.
