T- Title
Before reading or analyzing the poem, read the title and think about what the poem might be about. Jot down as many ideas as you can think of.
P - Paraphrase
Before analyzing the poem, don't overlook the literal meaning.

Write in your own words exactly what happens in the poem.
C - Connotation
A - Attitude
What is the attitude of the poem? Consider diction, images and details when determining the attitude. There may be more than one attitude.

Attitude cannot be named in a single word. Think complexity.


S - Shifts
Rarely does a poem begin and end the poetic experience in the same place. Watch for the following keys to signal shifts:
T- Title II
Revisit the title of the poem, but now see if you can interpret its meaning.

Does the poem offer any new insight to help you better understand the poem?

What evidence from the poem makes you think in this new way?
T - Theme

What is the theme of the poem?

Consider the following when determining theme:


What is the poem saying about human experience, motivation or condition?
What subject or subjects does the poem address? What do you learn about those subjects?
What idea does the poet want you to take away with you concerning these subjects?
Remember: Any theme of any work of literature is stated in a complete sentence. and should not be specific or exclusive to that specific work.
Most often you will need to paraphrase line by line. Occasionally you may paraphrase until end stops (periods,
questions marks, etc.) or by stanza.
You will need to know what paraphrasing technique works best for your poem.
DO NOT just write what the device is, but analyze why it is important and what meaning it conveys.
