Disadvantages of Group Learning Styles

For general education students:
1. Provides an opportunity to become non-productive; use this time as a “chat session”.
2. Can become bossy and demanding of other less knowledgeable students.

For ESE and/or ELL Students:
1. Can ‘sink into the background’ while others complete the task for them.
2. Feel intimidated by their more knowledgeable peers.

Advantages of Group Learning Styles

For general education students:
1. Students understand more by comparing with others.
2. Group learning encourages collaboration.
3. Students with better skills serve as role models.


For ESE and/or ELL students:
1. Provides them the outlet to model after their general education peers.
2. Can collaborate with other students to figure out correct answers.
3. Provides them the option of listening only instead of active participation until they feel more comfortable.
