2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? METAL FANS Male or Female? The magazine suggests that a metal fans image is mostly male dominated, especially as many of the bands featured are male dominated I however have tried to challenge this stereotype, knowing that women also like this kind of music from my questionnaire therefore I have depicted on my front cover a female model. Colours Suggests that this social group that most of them like dark colours as much of my magazine in coloured in black. I have also found, through my questionnaires that the target audiences favourite colours are red and purple – red in particular is usually stereotyped as this social groups colour, sometimes relating to blood as this group can be seen stereotypically as wild and sometimes violent. Attitude? The magazines title ‘scream’ suggests that its target audience are sometimes ‘crazy’ people – that they have no care in the world, they just want to go out and have fun. However, on the other hand, it can also suggest that these people are sometimes troubled, and this view can be heightened by the powerful, sometimes brutal, but beautiful energy of metal music, and the sometimes disturbing, strong, meaningful lyrics. Also suggests that the attitude of these people is powerful, strong and held together, maybe sometimes a little unhinged or maybe passionate people who strongly express their emotions through music. Another thing about the target audience I think my magazine highlights is the fact that these people don’t like to conform and be ‘normal’ – they like to be themselves, express themselves, and not go along with the social norms of society, or follow and copy each other like many other social groups. It can also suggest that these people are talented – there is even an article in my magazine about the best guitars, suggesting that many of the fans of this type of music genre would be musically talented, for example, able to play the guitar. Furthermore, it also suggests that these people enjoy socializing etc, as there is a regular article on ‘living the nightlife’, a guide to metal clubs in different cities of England – this shows the fun, carefree side of metal fans, the fact that their main goal in life it to not care about anything life throws at them and just go out and have a good time.
