Introduction To... The 5 Industries of Tourism The 5 industries of the tourism sector are accommodations, food and beverages, transportation, recreation and entertainment, and travel services.
The 8 sectors of tourism were accommodations, food and beverages, transportation/travel, attractions, meeting/events/conferences, adventure/ecotourism/recreation, travel trade and tourism services.
The reason there was a change from the 8 sectors of tourism to the 5 industries of tourism was because Canada, the United States, and Mexico had different sectors in tourism and this lead to tourists having a harder time to understand the sectors of tourism
These countries leaders gathered and constructed categories that the 8 sectors would fall into so the tourists will have an easier time exploring. About the 5 Industries of Tourism The Food and Beverages Industry Food and Beverages Industry The food and beverages industry pertains to the consumption of food by tourists.
It implements the ideas of restaurants from fast service to fine dining. In recent years this industry has implemented food vendors in bookstores, department stores and casinos.
In recent years, this industry has been the largest tourism industry and it employed 753300 people in 2005.
Food and beverage outlets may include restaurants from a wide range of fast service to fine dining, as well as pubs, bars, nightclubs and lounges.
Food services are also directly included in the accommodations industry because hotels employ food service workers, thus increasing the significance of the food and beverage industry. Cook The Cook prepares and cooks a seemingly endless variety of foods.
The Cook works under the Chef.
The Cook acts as a supervisor and supervises the kitchen helpers and also instructs the kitchen staff in preparation, handling and cooking food. The Cook does not require a degree in cooking.
The Cook may be directed to plan menus, order supplies, record food supplies, and estimate food portions as well as requirements and costs.
Minimum wage is $15 an hour for some cooks but $12 to $25 an hour for institutional cooks.
These earnings depend on the employer, location, experience, and position.
To become a cook, you must have an education level of this caliber: At least a high school diploma, on-the-job training and/or post-secondary education or an apprenticeship would help in becoming a cook. Sous Chef The Sous Chef;
Supervises all kitchen workers.
Requires a degree in cooking.
Demonstrates new equipment to the staff.
Is most often the second in command in the kitchen and also assumes the role of the Executive Chef in their absence.
May also plan menus, kitchen supplies, and requisition food, and prepares/cooks meals or specialty foods.
The minimum wage of a sous chef is $18-$24.
Often work in kitchens at restaurants.
Usually have to work overtime in order to complete tasks. Transportation Transportation is an essential part of the tourism industry and the sector is a significant employer.
Over a quarter of a million Canadians work in the four modes of the transportation sector: road, air, rail and marine.
In 2005, 50000 Canadians were employed in the Travel Services industry. Travel Trade, Retail Travel Agencies and Wholesale Tour Operators all transportation’s works.
Travel Services employees make individual or group reservations for accommodations, tours, transportation, food and beverage, and/or for attractions if they are employed by an organization that is established to provide such services.
Other employees in this industry work for organizations that plan special events such as conferences, major meetings, trade shows and conventions. Taxicab Driver Taxicab driver is a vehicle and driver for hire; drives passengers and/or goods to destination.
Taxicab drivers are important to a city’s transportation, it almost the first impression to a city or country.
They are goodwill ambassadors and often the first contact for visitors to the area.
A nice taxicab driver can let tourist have a good begin for their travel and enjoy the different amorous feelings.
Taxicab Driver is essential part of the transportation.
Make an average of $14000 to $40000 a year.
Usually self-employed.
Choose where and when to work. Transportation Inspector Inspect trucks and buses, trains, aircraft, or boats as well as tour buses and cruise ships.
Ensure the safety of the transportation vehicle.
Usually write inspection reports due to issues the fines and/or citations, and also order repairs
Permitted to investigate accidents
Work for the federal and provincial government agencies, or industry employers
Often work outdoors.
Take safety precautions, for the lives of many rely on this inspection.
This work usually causes stress.

Many opt for careers in this area because of its flexibility of moving to a numerous variety of regions and establishments.
Most often there are nice career growth potentials, especially for those employed with appropriate training, skills and experience. Housekeeper House keepers’ core tasks are to clean the floors, vacuum the carpets, as well as washing windows.
They wash linens and make beds, they also keep the tourists needs into concern.
They are employed by hotels and other businesses. This work can also be physically demanding.
The minimum wage for this job is $20 an hour. These earnings depend on the employer, experience and the location.
This career requires no educational degree. Sales Representative The sales representative promotes products and/or services, and identifies and solicits new clients or target groups.
They prepare sales reports and/or track activities, estimate or quote prices, credit terms, prepares sales contracts, warranties and the delivery dates, processes orders and makes delivery arrangements.
They may also help to organize as well as conduct sales campaigns, set the directions or guidelines, assigns or review the work of others, and may participate in trade shows and/or other promotions.
Their annual earnings are $20000-$100000. They work in companies with any kind of product or service.
Sales representatives can also work in offices, and may also travel to the customers, homes or businesses.

Entertainment About the Recreation and Entertainment Industry The recreation and entertainment industry employed 479400 people in 2003.
This industry are predicted to be the fastest growing tourism industry by 2015 and offer a unique build of careers.
Tourists acquire a heart worthy connection to careers in this industry such as artists and how they draw through feelings.
Building a strong connection with this industry leads more tourists to enjoy it and helps the economy grow.
The recreation and entertainment industry invites those who have artistic minds to visit the country thus the tourists are attracted. Tour Guide The tour guide leads participants (individuals or groups) on tours, ensures itineraries are met, and provides commentary in an informative and entertaining manner, which creates positive experiences for the participants within our time frame.
The tour guide is also responsible for the safety of the group and keeping the group united.
Tour guides are hired by the governments to work at a variety of parks and other public sites, and can also work for organizations such as travel companies and historic museums and regular museums.
They may work many day trips requiring overnight stays at hotels.
Many of them work evenings as well as weekends.
These workdays can be very long.
A tour guides’ minimum wage is $24 an hour.
To become a tour guide, you don’t require any formal requirements. The Head of Visitor Services The head of visitor services presents information to visitors so they can attract and ensures that the tourists feel welcome, safe and comfortable.
They train, organize, schedule and supervise interpreters.
They organize display and exhibit that facilitate interpretation of the attraction, and maintain audio-visual materials, and ensure all visitor areas are clean and have adequate directional signage.
They also prepare and implement the budgets and they may initiate advertising programs on the facilities.
Their annual salary is $15-$30 an hour.
The requirements for the job are a minimum of a high school diploma. Travel Service About the Travel Service Industry In 2003, 41200 Canadians were employed in the travel services industry.
Travel services employees work to make individual or group reservations for accommodations, tours, transportation, food and beverage and for attractions if they are employed by an organization that is established to provide services pertaining to this.
Other employees in this industry work for organizations that plan special events such as conferences, major meetings, trade shows and conventions. Event Managers The Event managers work in offices and make a salary of $25000-$60000 a year.
Event managers don’t require any educational degree.
Event managers are responsible for:
Determining many of the parameters, policies, and procedures of an event
Planning, designing as well as producing an event
Overseeing the co-ordination of an event they are designated to
Developing and implementing the marketing plan for events
Preparing financial, evaluative reports, business and related to an event
Developing a risk management plan and overseeing the financial management of an event Wholesale Tour Operator Tour operators and wholesalers develop and package tours to sell and to retail travel agencies for inbound travel to Canada or for outbound travel to other destinations.
Usually these are all-inclusive tours that only include travel, accommodations, meals and entertainment, and focuses on a niche like employee incentive travel, or convention-related or special-interest travel, such as theater, sports or bird-watching tours.
Wholesale tour operators may work independently but they may also be affiliated with an air or motor coach line and/or other travel-related business.
Wholesalers make an average earning of $15 an hour.
