Future Town Concepts
-How will the future town look like?-

1.) Introduction
2.) General facts
3.) Future Town Concepts
3.1.) Underground City
3.2.) Ocean City
3.3) Monitored/Networked City
3.4) Ecological/Sustainable City
3.4.1) Future Cities
3.4.2) Farmer scrapers + Milan
6.) Sources/Questions
6.) Sources
• Ideas/concepts oscillate between ecology and technical visions
• Ecologists: sustainable urban development
• Technologists: cars in air/on rails, virtual/monitored city
• Visionaries: cities under earth, in oceans, into the air
• Revolutionaries: settlements on moon or mars
• 4 main concepts, but also mixed forms
2.) General facts
3.1.) Underground City
• modern cities: more and more underground areas
• Car parks, traffic routes, shopping centers, restaurants
• Technical and structural development
• Living/working/shopping on several floors
• Lower floors: cars and trains in tubes
• “Lightpipes” for daylight --> growth of plants
• Geothermal heat
• Micro-organisms clean waste water
• With today’s and future technologies these cities are possible
examples today:
particle accelerator CERN, Switzerland
underground city Montreal
3.2.) Ocean City
• Lack of room
• Development of giant city projects
• 1.) X-Seed
• At coast of Japan
• 4000m high/for 700.000 inhabitants
• Living areas, offices, giant amusement parks, schools, universities, parks, lake districts, forests
• 2.) TRY 2004
• Giant pyramid
• area of 800 hectare/for 1.000.000 inhabitants

realization improbable
--> high costs
--> many unresolved technical problems
3.3.) Monitored/Networked City
• Bad development of public life in dangerous areas
• But: public life important for competitiveness of cities
• more monitored areas for safety
• Almost every part of city is visible
• Virtualization of cities
• Speeding up of information transmission
• --> networked cities develop
• Internet is main element
• New possibilities of communication, information collecting, work, life in general
• Online banking, online offer of services, virtual department stores
• --> virtual activities influence city development
3.4.) Ecological/Sustainable City
• Biggest environmental problem is growing traffic
--> big areas, pollution
• Measures: renunciation of cars/increase of attractiveness of public transport system
• Free areas can be planted
• Smaller ways between living, shopping, working
• Saving of resources
• Wind/solar energy, waste recovery
• Reduce of water consumption
• Ideally: balance between used and produced resources
