Everyone has a different style in order to achieve this goal, but any good manager is capable of adapting their management style in order to meet the particular situation or needs of a certain employee.

Within the the travel and tourism industry, some people may be lucky enough to work at an overseas holiday resort.

Locations like this contribute towards an effective workplace as with good weather and happy customers it is relatively easy to have a positive attitude during work.

On the other hand you could be stuck working in a call centre. This typically means you'll be office bound and on the phone for most of the day. Organisations have to consider how poorer environments can be improved so staff stay motivated.
Hours of work can vary throughout the industry depending on your job. Within the travel and tourism industry hours can be the usual office hours of 9-5, or can be out of hours due to the nature of your work. However, hours do not usually exceed 40 hours per week.

Flexible working can be offered aswell. This is where they work a set number of hours per week, but can choose when they are, within limitations.

For example, if you're a business travel agent dealing with a customer in Dubai coming to the UK, you'd have to take into consideration the time difference for the customer and work different hours.
Health and safety is a large factor to consider when working in an effective workplace. Legislations such as the 'Health and Safety at Work Act 1974' are put in place and all organisations must comply with them. A lapse in health and safety procedures can cause the collapse of a business and even prosecution.

Part of the legislation covers food and chemical safety when working in certain areas of the industry.

Companies usually have training in place and ensure that all new and existing employees complete their training and top-up sessions. Doing this regularly and efficiently can boost the work ethic within a workplace, as employees feel safe in their working envionment.


The equipment and resources that a company provides for their staff can be an important factor to consider when attempting to motivate staff within the workplace. The latest IT equipment can put faith in the company that they're working for.
Most businesses involve their staff with company parties and social outings. These are useful events as they can create a healthy and friendly working environment among staff.
Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs is a useful theory to consider when talking about motivation within the workplace as it relates to the workplace in the travel industry.

Maslow's theory is presented as a pyramid, showing that employees can work their way up once the the lower levels are fulfilled. It also shows the different levels that an employee may be experiencing. This can also affect their work rather than encourage them to move forward.
Herzberg's Hygiene theory identifies characteristics that can satisfy people with their jobs and those that can dissatisfy them.

The satisfiers are factors that give people long term motivation and enable them to enjoy their work. The dissatisfiers are the factors that do not ultimitely motivate people within the workplace on a long term basis.

This theory is important to consider when contributing towards an effective workplace as companies should focus on the satisfiers in order to help the workplace run more efficiently.
Incentives can be used in order to motivate staff. Financial incentives include;

Remuneration (meaning how much you get paid)
Bonuses
Discounts
Pension Schemes
Incentive Schemes (this may be competitions for staff to enter based on generating new ideas within the workplace)
Other incentives can include;

Holiday entitlement
Perks (e.g company cars and travelling)
Opportunities for promotion and progression

All of these incentives are important to consider with factors that contribute towards an efficient workplace as they are ultimately factors that can promote motivation, have a positive effect on the work force within the work place.
Teamwork skills are a fundamental asset that keeps things going within a workplace. A team is a group of people that work together in order to achieve a common goal, this is usually group targets of sales or generating a certain level of customer service.

A good team is capable of achieving more as a group that member could individually. Ways of achieving good teamwork are;

teams solving problems and making decisions together
focusing on priorities as a team, with everyone working towards the same aim
providing a sense of belonging and status as a team
team providing a support network for one another
Throughout the workplace, open communication should be encouraged, as well as the idea of free expression.

Channels of communication like this can maximise the workload within a workplace as employees are given the chance to freely express their opinions and evolve as a team member throughout the work place.
Legislation exists within the workplace that all companies must comply to when it comes to equal opportunities for all employees. Legislation such as these exist so that there is no discrimination present within the work place. If they're not adhered to, businesses can face prosecution.

Race Relations Act 1976
- making discrimination on racial grounds unlawful in employment, training and education.
Sex Discrimination Act 1995
- making discrimination against grounds of gender, marital status or sexual orientation unlawful.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995
- making it unlawful to discriminate against people with disabilities in the workplace.
Equal Pay Act 1970
- making it unlawful to discriminate the distribution of pay based on someone's gender.
Age Discrimination
- making discrimination against employees based on their age unlawful since 2006.


These procedures must be included within an employee's contract or must be referenced as to where they can be found.

Disciplinary procedures refer to official warnings employees may be given based on reasons such as misconduct within the workplace.

Grievance procedures refer to complaints by employees that aren't satisfied with aspects of their employment. Employees should be informed on who to complain to and their rights to appeal any results.
Investors in People is a UK quality standard developed in 1991. hose companies that gain the award have proved that they invest in the training and development of their staff.

The standard for this is based on four key principles;

commitment for the top to develop all employees
regular reviews of training and development needs
taking relevant action to meet the needs throughout employee's careers
evaluating training and development outcomes for individuals and the company to continue improvement.
Mentoring schemes offer one to one relationships with someones of greater experience than the other. They are proving more popular within the workplace due to their efficiency.

The process of a mentor involves regular meetings where the mentee's job and career developments are discussed.

The mentor does not act as a manager but acts as a teacher and guide for the person with less experience. Less informal types of mentoring include 'buddying systems'. Buddying systems are typically used for new employees. A more experienced employee will then show them the ropes and ease them into the workplace.
The security of an employee's job is important to consider when it comes to efficiency within the workplace. Many contracts can be fixed term, meaning their period of employment is not indefinite.

These type of contracts can create flexibility for employers. However contracts like these can also be demotivating for staff and can show on an employer's quality of a work load.
Benefits of Training
Employers that wish to prove an effective workplace offer ongoing training and development for all employees. The benefits of doing so include;

improving individual performance
improving team performance
allowing staff to be better informed
teaching staff to deal with changes and emergencies
making a more flexible workforce
improving morale
allowing managers time to delegate tasks to others capable of doing so.
Employers provide instruction and training to ensure health and safety to all new employees. The induction process is the first stage of training and is important as it can prove effective in helping them to work and adapt quickly in their new environment.

Induction training covers;

the nature of the job being taken
introduction to the workplace and to its staff
the lines of responsibility
facilities within the workplace
health and safety basics
Training opportunities within a workplace typically include;

In-house training
- larger companies offer in-house training using their own material and resources. This can be beneficial as the material can be tailor made to fit the company's needs.
External courses
- external course are sourced based on the industry that the company is in. Businesses allow employees to attend these courses in order to gain more qualifications or benefit from new knowledge.
An appraisal measures the performance of an employee and usually takes place one a year. These are constructed in interview form, usually by a manager or someone with higher authority.

A good appraisal can be a motivating factor for employees as they are given constructive feedback and praised for their current work.

Appraisals involve discussing an employees performance with talks of training needs, future aspirations and points for improvement also taken into account.
