Badakhshan landslide, Afghanistan. 2 May 2014.
What is this image showing?
What impact will the the event have on the people who live there?
Will the event impact YOU?
On May 2nd, two large landslide struck a rural and isolated settlement in the Badakshan region of Afghanisation
What do you already know about Afghanistan?
So how would
you
describe

a
landslide?
The BBC defines a landslide as:

'the movement of rocks and soil down a slope and, when a large slide occurs in an area of dense human habitation, large numbers of people can be killed. In January 2011 mudslides in south-eastern Brazil killed more than 400 people.
Many natural events such as heavy rainfall, an earthquake or volcano can trigger a landslide, but human activities such as building construction can also cause or increase the chances of such an event.'
Your turn
Read through the resource sheets on the Badakhshan landslide.

You need to produce a report outlining the following:

Location of the event

Detail of the landslide - suspected cause

The impact on the local population (based on what we know from current media reports)

What rescue and support YOU think should be offered.
Describe the location of Afghanistan. Remember to refer to continents and other countries.
A small selection of
development
data

comparing the UK, USA and Afghanistan.

What can you learn about Afghanistan from this data? Is it a fair representation of the country?
What do all of these images have in common?
Photos and landslide links taken from Professor Dave Petley's blog: http://blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/
Scientists think the land around the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan is made of
loess
. This is wind blow sediment that will be loosely held together and will allow water to drain through it.

There was A LOT of rain in this region before the landslide occurred.....
