Leadership Skills:
A world that doesn't start with
an alternative perspective
Leaders Need a Following
by Simon Sinek
Start with WHY
MLK provided the tipping point for the Civil Rights movement.
TIVO provided the tipping point for recording and editing out unwanted content for later viewing. We provide the tipping points in our own areas when we are courageous enough o start with WHY and prove it to our patrons
Tipping Point
Vision is the WHY
Process is the HOW
What is the service
Measurement – why they do what they do are inextricably linked
Yet not all can explain the “why” great leaders provide the why and engage their staff in providing the “how”
The problem with most organizations
To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved.
- George MacDonald
We show up because we have a common belief – reliability because we do what we say we are going to do
TRUST
how to rally those who believe
The biggest challenge is success

Rely on data and information?
Logic tells us yes.

Simon Sinek tells us
it is what we can't see that makes
inspiring leaders'
long-term success more predictable.
How can we as leaders ensure that we start with WHY?
Simon Sinek's premise:
Leaders who start with Why inspire,
and this ingredient is essential to their
long-term success.

"Great leaders are able to inspire people to act...
to give people a sense of purpose or belonging...
For those who are inspired,
the motivation to act is deeply personal."
Why Start With WHY?
Sinek begins his book with a statement
that echoes Pat Wagner's definition of leadership:

There are leaders and there are those who lead.
Leaders hold a position of power or influence.
Those who lead inspire us.

Examples of culture which acts like a net - allowing people to feel protected and leave the organization better than when we found it
The Emergence of Trust

"People don't buy What you do,
they buy Why you do it."

When we feel manipulated, we are
following What someone does.
When we feel inspired, we are
following Why someone does
What they do.

Understanding the BRAIN and the GOLDEN CIRCLE helps us understand not only how to become better leaders but also how others want to be better led.

WHAT IS THE GOLDEN CIRLCE?
Sinek tells us it is the brain based naturally occurring pattern that explains how great leaders inspire action.

Those who know WHY need those who know HOW
The cone is the example of an ideal organization:
The leaders at the top embody a belief; the reason the company exists.
Executives and Administrators assist with the process of bringing the leader’s vision to fruition.
The front line staff are there to witness the results and share the leader’s passion with the rest of us.

Is there a commercial that gives you goose-bumps? Does it connect to you on that visceral or limbic level?
Symbols:
Not just a company, but a way of life.
Communication is not about speaking, it’s about listening.
The only contact the company has with the disorganized marketplace is at the WHAT level. If everything that is said and done communicates the leader’s WHY, the marketplace will see that in the WHAT product and gravitate towards it.
