AMAZING ATHLETES WHO OVERCAME BARRIERS
Bethany Hamilton
In this article, the author explains Bethany's determination and passion for surfing. After loosing her arm to a 14ft. tiger shark, Bethany wanted wanted nothing more than to get back into the water. She was surfing again after just one month! She continued pursuing her dream of becoming a professional surfer. Now, she is an amazing surfer and placed second in the ASP 2009 World Junior Championships!
Tom Dempsey
Dempsey likes hitting people which sometimes gets him in trouble. He and his wife told interviewers that he likes to hit people and that he didn't care. One time, Tom punched his coach and got kicked of the team! Tom then became a kicker/defensive lineman but was beat up by bigger players, so he decided to focus on kicking. Even after becoming strictly a kicker, he continued to hit people.
What I Think About "It's Not Just A Game"
"When we start moving and having fun we feel good about ourselves." While playing sports our energy level raises. Plus, sports act as antidepressants. Sports also increase the brain's level of endorphins, boosting your mood.
Amazing Athletes
-Both Bethany and Tom are missing limbs
-The sport they play would be easier with the limbs they are missing
-Overcame their barriers and are now an inspiration for many people
-Ignored the fact that they are different and did their best at their sport everyday
-Tom was a kicker on an NFL football team
-Born without toes on right foot
-Tom needed his toes to kick
-Often got kicked off teams for hitting

-Bethany is professional surfer
-Lost arm in shark attack
-Bethany needs her arm for certain surfing tricks
-She surprisingly had the fear of NOT being able to surf again

Amazing Athletes
Who Broke Through Barriers
Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark.

A lot of people didn't like track star Jesse Owens because of his race. Plus, Jesse didn't have a lot of money.

Tom Dempsey is a kicker on a NFL football team and doesn't have toes on his right foot.

Simon Keith is a soccer player with a heart transplant

Wilma Rudolph is a track star who had polio as a child.

Michael Oher is a NFL football player who had a rough childhood. He repeated grades, in high school his dad was murdered, and he was in and out of foster homes and often homeless.
pg.12, paragraph 2
"Both team and individual sports have advantages and disadvantages..." On a team other people's performance counts. For individual sports, it is only your own performance that counts.
