That We Use
About the Presentation
The MERLOT Teacher Education Editorial Board represents many disciplines within teacher education. We review materials on educational theory and philosophy, educational practices, special education, arts education, as well as academic content related to math, science, social studies, reading and language arts methods classes. Each year the MERLOT Teacher Education editorial board selects its "best of teacher education," representing many of the areas in which we review materials.

This prezi was created as an accompaniment to our presentation at the 7th Annual Emerging Technologies for Online Learning to highlight great sites and apps that we've reviewed (and used!) and to share the ways in which we've employed these tools in our teaching and learning.
How This Works
When we initially began to categorize the applications shared in our presentation, we used the
Framework for 21st Century Learning
* as our structure. We utilized the subset of 21st Century Student Outcomes under Learning and Innovation Skills - Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, and Communication and Collaboration. However, as the amassed list of applications grew and grew, we realized that this Prezi would work more successfully if we opened it up to the entire framework. In doing so, we've been able to capture discipline-specific apps, apps for instructors to use to support teaching and learning, and apps to encourage success beyond the classroom.

We've designed this Prezi to be used as a dynamic infographic. You can follow the designated path, or click around and explore. Each app is linked to its detail record in MERLOT so that you can see its accompanying peer review and practical examples of how to implement it in the classroom.

Learning and Innovation Skills
"Learning and innovation skills increasingly are being recognized as the skills that separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century, and those who are not. A focus on creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration is essential to prepare students for the future." (http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21-framework/60)

The Learning and Innovation Skills are broken down into the three sub-categories of:

Creativity and Innovation
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Communication and Collaboration
Creativity and Innovation
Creativity and Innovation is defined by the framework as students demonstrating the ability to think creatively on their own, work creatively with others, and implement innovations. (http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21-framework/262)

The following apps in MERLOT support Creativity and Innovation in the classroom:

Information, Media and Technology Skills
"People in the 21st century live in a technology and media-suffused environment, marked by various characteristics, including: 1) access to an abundance of information, 2) rapid changes in technology tools, and 3) the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills related to information, media and technology."
