Battery-Powered Pacemakers Who?
Earl Bakken from Minnesota invented the first battery-powered pacemaker. When?
The battery powered-pacemaker was invented in November 1957. Why?

In 1957 when a blackout occurred in Minnesota, this original pacemaker stopped working. A small boy ("blue baby") died as a result of this. Dr. Lillehei, this boy's doctor asked Earl Bakken (an electrical engineer who started Medtronic in 1949. Medtronic originally was a small business run in Bakken's garage. In November of 1957, Medtronic created the first external and wearable battery-powered cardiac pacemaker. How?
Earl Bakken's pacemaker was used on a child (another "blue baby") and its performance was an instant success. The pacemaker has significantly evolved over time: it has gotten much smaller, and it is now implantable. Engineers also continue to work on the battery, making it rechargeable and also increasing the battery life. Three Benefits:
The battery-powered pacemaker regulates heartbeats and saves lives.
With the pacemaker, people will be able to go about with their daily lives without any pain or sufferings.
Doctors can monitor the patient's heart condition remotely using telemetry options with recent pacemakers. Three Detriments:
The device implant procedure through surgery can be risky
The battery has a limited life and needs to be replaced
Sometimes, very strong electromagnetic fields can interfere with the pacemaker, damaging heart tissue. Examples of these strong fields include airport security systems, MRI's, etc. Conclusion:
I think that this life-saving device is an important technology. It has saved many lives and the technology continues to improve. I don't think that those with heart ailments would be able to live without this device. In a way, it is important for everybody, including those who don't have any heart problems. It teaches us how a very small piece of technology can save lives and create a multinational company that makes more life saving devices than just pacemakers. It is an inspiration for us all.
