Unreal Conditionals and
Wish statements

What is a Conditional?
A
Conditional
sentence is a sentence expressing a
condition
(x) and a
result
(y). It contains two clauses: a
dependent
clause, often called the "if clause," and an
independent
clause, also called the "main clause."

Expressed: If (x) --> then (y)

Example: If I had more money, I would buy a new car.
What is an Unreal Conditional?
An
Unreal Conditional
is a sentence that describes a situation that is
untrue
,
unlikely
,
imagined
, or
impossible
.

Example: If I were a princess, I would live in a castle.

I am not a princess, and it is unlikely that I ever will be. Therefore, this situation is
Unreal
.
Present and Future Unreal Conditionals
Present and Future Unreal Conditionals are present and future situations that are untrue unlikely, imagined, or impossible.

Both tenses use the following construction:

If clause =
simple past
Main (result) clause =
would + base form

*** If clause: If the verb is be use
were
for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
If I
were
you, I'd study more often.

*** Main clause:
Could
,
might
, and
should
can also be used in place of would.
If I won the lottery, I
could
go to graduate school.
Past Unreal Conditional
Use the Past Unreal Conditional for past untrue, imagined, or impossible situations.

If clause =
past perfect
main clause =
would + have + past participle

Example: If I
had studied
harder, I
wouldn't have failed
the exam.

If I hadn't studied, I
