Transcript of ROCK CANDY
HYPOTHESIS VARIABLES ETC.DAYS 1-2
DAY 7 AND FUN FACTS
The variables in the experiment were the ingredients we used to replace the regular sugar(corn syrup coconut sugar) and the three jars.
After about the 2ND hour small crystals began forming along the string. Due to the color of the sugar water in experiment 2( coconut sugar) I couldn't tell if it was going up the string or on the bottom until day 3. Nothing is forming in experiment 3.
The crystals along the string on experiment 1 got a little bigger. Nothing is forming in experiment 2(that I can tell) or 3 yet.
The crystals in experiment 1 are getting bigger and now there are crystals forming on the bottom of the jar. In experiment 2 crystals are starting to form at the bottom of the jar. But there is still nothing forming in experiment 3. Now I can see things in experiment 2 forming at the bottom of the jar.
The crystals are still getting bigger in experiment 1 along the string and the bottom. In experiment 2 the crystals are starting to get even bigger and going up the sides of the jar instead of going up the string like experiment 1. There is still nothing happening inn experiment 3.
In experiment 1 the crystals are still growing along the string and the bottom. The crystals along the string are the biggest and the crystals along the bottom are the smallest . In experiment 2 the crystals have almost reached the top but not yet. Still nothing in experiment 3.
In experiment 1 it is pretty much the same since yesterday it hasn't changed how long or how wide it is. In experiment 2 it is about 2 cm away from the lid. Still nothing has formed in experiment 3.
On the last day I opened all the jars to see what happened while they were in the cupboard. Experiment 1 was the easiest to open because it wasn't fully a solid. Experiment 2 on the other hand was the hardest to open because it was almost completely a solid. Experiment 3 had nothing formed in it but it turned into jelly in a way. When it was in the jar and you turned it upside down it wouldn't move and we thought it was rock solid until we opened the jar...then it seemed like a liquid.
5 facts about rock candy
COCONUT SUGAR AND SUGAR
We poured all 3 mixtures into separate jars, taped note cards to each of them and wrote down the ingredients. After that we took about 6 inches of string poked a hole in each lid of the jars and taped the 6 inches of string to the top and tied something to the bottom of the string to weigh it down.
JAR SET UP
Unfortunately we couldn't take pictures on some of them because I couldn't figure out a web site to go to and we don't have a camera to take pictures because it broke a long time ago. But I found a website at the last minute. http://webcamtoy.com/
PICTURES AND CORN SYRUP
.ORGANIC COCONUT SUGAR
.ONE 16 OZ JAR
.ONE 13.5 OZ
.ONE 18 OZ JAR
.POLANER STRING(all 3)
For the regular sugar we took a medium sized pot(we used the same pot for each one) added 1 cup of water,2 cups of sugar, and let it sit on the stove for 10 minutes. For the coconut sugar we added 1 cup of water, 2 and a half cups of coconut sugar, and let it sit on the stove for 10 minutes. For the corn syrup we added 1 cup of water,2 cups of corn syrup and let it sit on the stove for 10 minutes.
INGREDIENTS AND COOKING
My hypothesis is that the corn syrup will take the longest to form because it has the thicker consistency then the other two. The regular sugar will be the fastest to form and the coconut sugar will be in the middle to form.

JARS AND PICTURES
1.With only 2 drops of food coloring it can change the color of the whole thing.
2.Rock candy doesn't have a taste(other than sugar)until you add flavoring oil.
3.By changing the size of the jar it changes the size of the candy.
4.You can dip rock candy in chocolate
5.Rock candy was invented in the 1800's
you can't tell but there
are light brown spots that
show where the crystals are
sorry this one broke
