3 Questions
1) How in the period of one week does a crowd of an estimated 1,000,000 people go from hailing Jesus, and shouting “Hosannas”, to shouting “Crucify Him!”?
"Hosanna" to "Crucify"
"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
Zechariah 9:9
Was He Surprised?
"Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man."
John 2:23-25
How Can I Be Saved?
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him."
John 12:24-26
The Cross Life
2) Did this sudden change of events come as a shock to Jesus or was it something He anticipated?
3) How can someone have assurance that they are in Christ?
"God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him."
John 3:17
"…Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately."
Luke 19:11
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Mark 10:45
"When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, 'They have no wine.' And Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.'"
John 2:3-4
"So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come."
John 7:30
"These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come."
John 8:20
"And Jesus answered them, saying, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.'"
John 12:23-24
"Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour '? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name."
John 12:27-28a
"Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end."
John 13:1
"Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, 'Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.'"
John 17:1-2
“The royal life does not begin with a coronation but with a crucifixion.”
Kent Hughes
