Discovery doesn't stay a secret for long

End of the Gold Rush
California became eligible for statehood just 2 years after the first discovery of gold
Gold became scarce within a few decades
Entire towns would be abandoned (ghost towns)
overall most the population stayed and built a stable society
California is still one of the most ethnically diverse states because of the Gold Rush Legacy
Women in Mining Communities
Men far outnumbered women
about 9:1
Most women made money by running boarding houses
only a few actually mined
