Collaborative Projects Social Networking Sites Virtual Game Worlds Social Media can be defined as a source of interactions between people in which they create, share, exchange and comment contents among themselves in virtual communities and networks. Collaborative projects is a type of social media that could serve as a resource and is put together by a collaboration of people that can be easily accessed by anyone.

You usually need to have an account and then you would be able upload or download your material. This material would usually be available to the public. A virtual game world is a computer based online community environment that is designed and shared by individuals so that they can interact in a custom-built, simulated world. Content Communities Social networking sites is an online service platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections. Active Worlds Importance of Social Media In today's society, social media play a big part in each person life. Whether your checking on the latest news, getting the latest in politics, listening to music or keeping in touch with friends, it is important that we engage in social media.
It is many people primary means of communicating. It is vital for marketing and advertising companies as they have found it to be the most successful way to market. Social Media has become our way of life. Who uses Social Media 91% of American adults who are online use social media. Nearly a quarter of the total time spent online is on social networks. There are now over 800 million Facebook users in the world, with more than 200 million joining in 2011 alone. Nearly 40% of those 800 million log in every single day.
Women tend to use more social media sites then men.
Twitter has the largest division of wealthy 27% earning 75k or more.
MySpace is the largest division of lower income users with 63% earning 50k or less.
Facebook has the largest division of older users with 37% being 45 or older.
Digg has the largest divison of users with a graduate degree at 9%.
What does this mean? Social Media is used by many different type of people of all races, gender, social class, or age all over the world. Social media is accessed from computers, tablets,iPods, smart phone, or even the television. Society if Social Media was Suddenly Removed If suddenly social media was removed from society, many of us would not know what to do with ourselves. Losing the ability to communicate would be one of the hardest things to deal with. We would most likely feel alienated from the world. We would not be able to download music or watch a YouTube video which would be unimaginable.Though it would be devastating at first, it would show how much social media is apart of everyone's lives. Statistics Online Communities & Popular Culture Today Online communities play such a large role in today's popular culture. Online communities has change the way many people socialize whether your meeting new people or playing a virtual game. News is posted on online communities as soon as it happens allowing people from all over the world to comment and share how they feel about the happening. This has made society more of a global melting pot. How Social Media changed over past 10 yeas Online communities has evolved tremendously from 2003.
Online communities is now more of an influence to children to read and write which improves their literacy.
According to Lisa Reichelt, social media allows for ambient intimacy which means that it allows us to keep in touch with people with a level or regularity and intimacy that we wouldn't usually have access to.
Online communities now allow us to have access to knowledge conviently with things like Google, Wikipedia, and blogs. This also empowers people to share their knowledge. Social Media changed Continued Social Media has been encouraging young people to become more involved on politics and voting. It played a huge role in the election of our president Barack Obama as well as the elections in Iran.
Social media now plays a large role in marketing and advertising.
Social Media is now obtained through networks that we have created.
Online communities are accessed through compters, tablets, iPods and smart phones. Social Media and Globalization Globalization is the process by regional economies, societies, and cultures are being integrated through a network of communication, transportation, and trade. Social Media plays a tremendous part in this. It allows us to know what is going across the world though news networks and Facebook. People from countries like Japan, Indonesia, and Russia are utilizing social media sites like Facebook or Twitter more and more each day. This vastly expands the online communities.
