Mraz's international breakthrough came with the release of the single, "I'm Yours", from the album, "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things". The single peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Mraz his first top ten single. The song was on the Hot 100 for 76 weeks, which beat the previous record of 69 weeks held by LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live".
Well, you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
Now I'm trying to get back
General Song Analysis
Before the cool dawn run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
And nothing's gonna stop me but divine intervention.
I reckon, it's again my turn
To win some or learn some.
But I won't hesitate
No more, no more.
It cannot wait,
I'm yours.
Well, open up your mind and see like me,
Open up your plans and damn you're free.
Look into your heart and you'll find love, love, love, love.
Listen to the music of the moment, people dance and sing, we're just one big family
And it's our God-forsaken right to be loved, loved, loved, loved, loved
So I won't hesitate
No more, no more.
It cannot wait,
I'm sure.
There's no need to complicate.
Our time is short.
This is our fate,
I'm yours.
Do you want to come on, scootch on over closer, dear
And I will nibble your ear
I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and I laughed.
I guess what I'll be saying is there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanities and just go with the seasons.
It's what we aim to do.
Our name is our virtue.
But I won't hesitate
No more, no more.
It cannot wait,
I'm yours.

Well, open up your mind and see like me,
Open up your plans and damn you're free.
Look into your heart and you'll find that the sky is yours.
So please don't, please don't, please don't...
There's no need to complicate.
'Cause our time is short.
This oh, this oh, this is our fate.
I'm yours.
Oh, I'm yours
Oh, I'm yours
Oh, oh,
Baby, do you believe, I'm yours?
You best believe, you best believe, I'm yours.
Stop caring so much. He's been spending so much time making sure he looks perfect to please everyone else but, there is still something wrong because NOBODY is perfect. So, he does whatever possible to try and see whats wrong with him. Then, his reflection gets blurry and he forgets where he began. So he starts over again, and is finally able to enjoy who he truly is. So just stop working on your appearance so much and go with the flow, because the only opinion that matters in your life should be your own, and you can never truly change who you are.
I believe these two verses describes how he met a girl and she was the most beautiful girl he has seen,"so hot that I melted", and who is making him want to change from a man that has followed the wrong path, to a man that is willing to get back on track. The verse, "I reckon it's again my turn to win some or learn some", to me, is that it is now time to win the girl and have a good relationship with her, or at least to learn some valuable wisdom from the experience.
The lyric in this verse, "Well, open up your mind and see like me, open up your plans and damn your free.", demonstrate that most of the time when people make plans, they are confined to a specific agenda being the time, place, etc. By "opening" up your plans or expanding your agenda, you can change your direction and you are no longer limited, thus you are free to explore more opportunities and encounter new experiences.
This verse here, for me, pretty much means that he just wants to say what he wants to say. In the context of love, saying what made him fall in love with her or to just make a move. In the context of life, to just not hesitate to go and do something, being spontaneous, to not complicate things and go with the flow
He's been spending way too much time making sure that everything looks perfect in the mirror. He's been bending his image and changing the way he looks to get a clearer image of himself and to get his image right but, his efforts fogged up the real image. So, he completely changed his appearance and started from scratch. Also, the verse, "I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror", is a figure of speech because of the fact he isn't actually checking his tongue in the mirror but, rehearsing what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. He realizes, in the end, that he should just say it.
Figures of Speech
Hyperbole
"and nothin's gonna stop me but divine intervention"
Here he is saying that it would take the intervention of something almighty, for example, God, to make him change his mind about her.
Analogy
"Look into your heart and you'll find that the sky is yours."
To listen to your feelings and to find the love for the significant other. And if you do, they will give you anything in the world so long as you desire it.
" you're so hot that I melted"
In this verse he didn't actually "melt" but, the girl had a significant impact that it made him look at her in awe.
"and bending over backwards just to try and see you clearer"
He's just saying that he's doing everything possible to try and get to know her better and get a clearer image of who she actually is.
Onomatopoeia
"Do you want to come on, scootch on over closer, dear"
The word, "Scootch", is an onomatopoeia of the word move. In this verse he actually mean, "move on a little closer, dear" but, uses the word, "Scootch" instead.
Dynamics
"I'm Yours" is a piano song (quiet) with a soft and mellow tune and with acoustic instruments playing in the background. It has a very "campfire" style tune that reminds me of being on the beach sitting around a fire with friends. The song also doesn't have complicated auto-tune and special sound effects to enhance the beat, which makes it a very genuine and authentic song that is soothing to the ears.
Some thoughts...
This song really reminds me of my mother who always reminded me to never care what people think of you and to strive to achieve your dreams. She always had this saying, "You start life with a blank canvas and as you grow older, you slowly add colour and pictures to that blank canvas. By the time you reach an old age, your canvas should be a masterpiece that showcases how bright and colourful your life was.
