Captain James Cook was an English navigator,explorer and cartographer. He was born on the 27th of October in Marton, Yorkshire. At the age of 18, he became an apprentice to John Walker.
James Cook made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean mapping various areas and recording several islands and coastlines on European maps.
Who Is James Cook?
James Cook explored new teritories to take advantage of his navigation, surveying and cartographic skills which he had attained during his voyages. In addition, he was fascinated by the sea sine the age of 16 when he was an apprentice at a fishing village.
Why Did James Cook Explore?
On August 26th 1768, James Cooks intention for his first voyage was to examine the plant Venus as it passed between the sun and earth. During his other two expeditions between 1772 and 1779, his goal was to either discover the southern continent or prove that it didnt exist.
What Were James Cooks Reasons For Exploring?
Captian James Cook sailed and made detailed maps of newly found land. During his three voyages to the Pacific Ocean he established contact with the eastern coastline of Australia, the Hawaiian Islands and also navigated around New Zealand.

James Cook and his crew did face problems on their voyages, especially on their first major expedition to New Zealand. Whist in Tahiti, the crew had some difficulties with natives stealing from a fort he had constructed for his scientific equipment. After leaving Australiahis crew was suddenly struck by health problems. Diseases such as scurvy and typhoid which are caused by lack of vitmin c and undercooked meat killed more than thirty of his crew.
