Chemistry Acid Acids are compounds whos characteristic properties include the kinds of reactions they undergo. Base An acid tastes sour, reacts with metals and carbonates, and turns blue litmus paper red. Bases are another group of compounds that can be identified by their common properties. pH Scale A base tastes bitter, feels slippery, and turns red litmus paper blue. The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes. A lemon is an example of an acid because it tastes sour. Soap is an example of a base because it tastes bitter and feels slippery. Acids and bases have many uses around the home and in industry. 1-7 is an acid, 7 is neutral, 8-14 is a base.
