Steam Power
The steam engine was the most important invention of the Industrial Revolution. Steam engines built by Thomas Newcomen were first used to pump water out of mines.
But James Watt made improvements to early steam engines. His most important improvement was to add a flywheel. Watt's engine had a rotary (turning) motion. Now steam engines could be used with belts to power other machines.
The steam engines were now used to power factories.

Before the Industrial Revolution most goods were produced by hand on small machines. This was done in people's houses in what was called................
Thread was spun slowly on spinning machines and cloth was woven on hand looms. The increased demand for goods meant that new machines had to be invented to produce more goods faster.

Coal Iron and Steel
Britain had plentiful supplies of coal and iron ore. Coal had many uses. Without it, many inventions would not have been possible. The amount of coal increased tenfold between 1750 and 1850.
Iron
Iron was also important in the Industrial Revolution. Iron ore was smelted (melted down) by charcoal (baked timber). But timber supplies were getting scarce. Then Abraham Darby found a way of smelting iron ore by using coke (baked coal) instead of charcoal. Now iron production could continue. Iron replaced wood in the building of bridges, ships, pipes and railway tracks, and in the manufacture of household appliances.
Steel was also widely used from the mid-19th century onwards, following Henry Bessemer's discovery of a method of producing cheap steel.
