Early Civilizations
THIS IS US TODAY!!
LETS GO BACK
BEFORE OUR LIVING HISTORY
WAY BACK
BEFORE THE WARS OF OUR RECENT HISTORY
WAY WAY BACK
BEFORE THE BIRTH OF OUR COMMON ERA
WAYYYY BACK
BEFORE THE GREAT CONQUERORS OF EARLY HISTORY
Where civilizations emerged
MESO-AMERICA
AND AFROEURASIA
circa 3000 BCE
THIS does NOT mean....
MAN DID NOT EXIST BEFORE THIS
Remember
HOMONIDS/HUMANS OCCUPIED THE EARTH FOR BILLIONS OF YEARS.
That was called....
PALEOLITHIC PERIOD
And Although.....
-the emergence of homo-sapiens marked the
beginning of the NEOLITHIC period (still known
as Pre-History)
-it took time for the "modern man" to adjust
and adapt
-but once they did....

The transition began
-they went from villages to societies
-to civilizations with culture, traditions, ideas
and writing systems we study today
-Pre-History ended and History began
SO WHERE DO WE BEGIN
ANCIENT EGYPT
Egypt is a recent name coined by the Greeks
People of the Nile River Valley called the land Kemet "black land"
Egypt or Kemet is located in present day Africa along the Nile River
The Nile River floods the surrounding lands yearly and leaves millions of tons of silt
Rainfall is scarce throughout the year. But the early Egyptians were able to conserve their water supply and use it consciously and efficiently
These hunter-gatherers began to settle along the Nile and formed villages.
These villages turned into kingdoms (Lower and Upper Egypt)
An Upper Egyptian King, Namar, was the first king to unite Egypt
His rule was the first of 30 Dynasties in Egyptian History
He made his new Capital in Memphis
He was the first ruler of the Old Kingdom
Unification
Historians organize Egyptian history into three time periods

Old Kingdom 2700B.C. -2200B.C.
Middle kingdom 2200-1800
New Kingdom 1800-945 B.C.

Old Kingdom
Theocracy: kings were religious and political leaders
Pyramids were built to honor Kings, providing them with an eternal place of rest

Kings in Memphis began to lose power around 2200 B.C.
1700’s Hyksos invade Egypt and rule for 110 years, took over with Horse and chariots and advanced weapons made of bronze

Middle Kingdom
1480 Hatshepsut became pharaoh
First ruled with husband, then ruled for son Thutmose III
Crowned herself pharaoh, built extensive burial site known as the valley of the Kings
Thutmose III, son became pharaoh after Hatsepshut died, conquered lands in Syria and North of Eupharates
Under Thutmose Egypt was exposed to more cultures
1370 b.c. Amenhotep and Nefertiti broke Egyptian tradition and made empire monotheistic (the worship of one God, the Sun God, Aton)

New Kingdom
Hatshepsut became pharaoh
First ruled with husband, then ruled for son Thutmose III
Crowned herself pharaoh, built extensive burial site known as the valley of the Kings
Thutmose III, son became pharaoh after Hatsepshut died, conquered lands in Syria and North of Eupharates
