With the Reactive Bullying Style the bully:
Is aggressive and emotional
Has poor impulse control
Reacts to an accidental bump in a violent manner & feels justified in his response
Feels constantly threatened
With the Proactive Bullying Style the bully:
Is non-emotional, controlled, deliberate

Delivers his/her aggression with the hope of achieving a goal, rather than in response to an external threat
Bullying is a Learned Behavior
It can also be UNLEARNED
More likely to develop anxiety and depression
Have more difficulty adjusting to middle school
Have more academic problems
More likely to drop out of school
Anxious
Insecure
Cautious
Rarely Defend Themselves
Are Isolated
May have Parents who are
Overprotective
CAN BE ANYONE!
Is anxious and sensitive
Tends to be a bit of a “loner” who gives off “victim” signals
Lacks self-defense skills and does not think quickly on his/her feet
Has few friends or support networks
Is easily aroused and impulsive
Tends to be annoying
Tends to tease or taunt bullies and egg them on
Makes themselves targets, but can’t defend themselves
Talk with Teachers/Staff
Break the code of silence
Act immediately
Be a good listener
Mobilize Witnesses
Encourage positive attitudes and increase self-esteem
Provide counseling
Ignore, use humor if you can
Walk away, don’t react
Stay with a crowd
Get help if pursued
Always tell a trusted adult
Do not get involved in any kind of interchange
Maintain eye contact, keep a neutral expression, do not stand too close
Say no or go away angrily and walk away immediately
Use “I” Messages
- “I feel …..(name one adjective)”
- “When you ….. (be specific)”
- “Because ….. (tell why – be brief)”
- “I need ….. (tell what you want him/her to do)”
