Ajahnique Smith Question Hypothesis Materials: Procedure Basically I have build a raft and I have to test the kinetic energy and how the other materials will affect the net water surface tension. I have to figure out which substance is a better motor for the raft: liquid landry detergent, tooth paste, vegetable oil or table salt. I hypothesize that the tooth paste will be a better motor for the raft because of it mass. I figure that the ingridients would react with the water to make the raft move. 1. Transparencies or you can sustitute with the clear cover from a paper protector.

14. Large basin or sink to hold the water and your transparency raft in. Cut out the raft.
a. You will need to cut a space in the back of the raft where the sponge will be. It should be slightly larger than the size you'll be cutting your sponge (which will be in step 3).
b. The length of the raft should be of 3–5 inches long, and a width that is approximately half of the length you choose. Record the size in your lab notebook.
2. Cut the sponge into small, identically sized pieces. The sponge should fit into the space cut in the back of the raft.
3. Run a toothpick horizontally through one of the small sponge pieces so enough of the two ends of the toothpick can rest on the transparency, then attach the toothpick ends with tape so that the sponge is attached to the small space at the back of the raft.
4. Fill a basin or sink with tap water.
5. Put the raft onto the water surface and let it float.
6. Put a drop of detergent onto the sponge at the end of the raft. If one drop isn't enough, put one or two more. This can be determined by if the raft has started moving.
7. Observe the motion. Record all observations in your lab notebook.
8. repeat all steps with each subsatnce Data/ Results Whatever floats your boat Exaplanation of Results There was no movement when the toothpaste and the vegetable oil were applied as motors for the raft. The detergent made the raft move for 4 seconds and the table salt made the raft move for 5 seconds. Conclusion My hypothesis was incorrect because the table salt was tested to be the best motor for the raft because it made the raft travel a longer distance and for a longer time. Relation to the real world A real world connection to this project is a marine architect career field. A marine architect is a designer of ship structures, hulls, and compartments. They work directly with equipment engineers and shipbuilders to guarantee that a ship functions well and that its overall system is sound. “Most marine architects work for private shipbuilding companies, but some work for design or research firms or are self-employed consultants(sciencebuddies.org)”. Many are working for the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea System Command, the U.S. Coast Guard, or other branches of government. Marine architects design the hull according to the needs of the buyer or client.
The ship's structural design must permit for the equipment needed to run it, the people who will use, the speed and maneuverability it will require, the stress it must endure, and many other factors. The requirements of a luxury liner differ considerably from those of an oil tanker. The ship must be economical to build, as well as to operate. Architects also select materials and write specifications for suppliers and construction workers. The architect's work usually continues throughout the building process, because some portions of ship design must be completed during the actual construction. Future Improvements do experiments with different temperature because maybe the temperature of the water could effect how good the motor is.
