ISA is a K-12 IB World School in the Netherlands, with around 950 students from 60 different countries
I am a Chartered Librarian specialising in services for young people, with a passion for stories and tech

I have been Upper School Librarian at the International School of Amsterdam in the Netherlands for just over 10 years
This version of my ECIS Lisbon prezi is annotated in blue type
The original had very little text as I like to present using mostly visuals

The Upper School Library is on two floors.
The main floor has the help desk, self checkout, laptop cart and desktops, group and individual study tables, a classroom area, books and magazines
The mezzanine floor has lots of face on display, spinners and comfortable seating. It houses our fiction collection, including our mother tongue collection, leisure magazines, EAL and graphic novels
in my presentation I asked the audience to choose a picture for me to talk about

each of these pictures represents
a tech tool or idea that can be used for
teachers, librarians and students to collaborate
and learn together
noodlebib is an online bibliography creator
but it also provides a useful place where students can organise and share their work - even linking to google docs
students enter details of all the resources they use for a unit or project
noodlebib's notecard feature means students can save text (or images) in their original form, paraphrase or use their own words. these cards can link to their sources or be independent
the 'parenthetical reference' tool shows students how to cite in text for any type of resource
twitter is often portayed as superficial, about people shouting tedious aspects of the everyday...
but really its power lies on conversations

collaborating and sharing with others, asking questions and suggesting possible answers
my tips for using twitter

follow at least 50 people

look at people's lists
for people to follow

use hashtags
(like #edchat or #tlchat)

if you don't like someone's
tweets unfollow them

organise your interests and people you follow by using a client like tweetdeck, which also has mobile apps which help you tweet
add yourself
to the twitter4teachers wiki, which is great for finding people to follow
we used twitter for author visits in 2010 with Melvin Burgess and Marcus Sedgwick

students tweeted their questions using a class account and the authors answered live
for 2 years we have also
used twitter for grade 6 students studying early humans. they sent questions to my palaentologist friend at the smithsonian
why not find an expert to ask? people are usually generous with their time especially if it's for students
when planning the library website we consulted staff and students, including using online surveys
bad news - we're up against google & wikipedia
good news - they like the variety and quality provided by the library
search boxes provided free by our databases minimise the clicks for students
these can be embedded into any website/blog or VLE such as Finalsite
more embedding ideas - twitter, twitpic, meebo, delicous and blogger - all help provide teachers and students with information and resources
final embedding tips - youtube videos, prezi (these are for teachers to use in the classroom) and issuu (makes even the most boring document look funky)
our easy to remember URL, open to the world
(passwords for remote access are hidden)
please feel free to take a look
special pages for big projects
feature relevant databases, list recommended websites and have a google custom search box
specify the sites you want google to search
the results are restricted to the websites chosen, only a few pages, familiar and safe
especially when grade 6 are searching for 'homo erectus'
batgirl is a simple and effective tool for the library to promote reading
I tweet a photo of Batgirl with a book every day, with a short blurb, it's quick and easy
the text and photo are fed in to the library website
however it's mostly librarians that follow her on twitter
so i made her a facebook account and added students as friends
everyday the photo and blurb appear in their facebook feeds
her account is also a handy place to store photos and advertise special events like book week
she also hangs out with famous authors...

this year we've started to use Good Reads (which can link to Facebook) in two ways
firstly in collaboration with a English teacher who is uses it with her students to record their reading and lead book discussions online
secondly a group of grade 11 CAS students are about to launch an online book group to celebrate and promote reading in school
i write a weekly 'tech tips' blog
highlighting tools for students and staff
it's a great way to keep your community up to date
the library hosts an informal weekly meeting for all staff
where we chat about the latest tech developments, share apps and discuss ideas
the library hosted TEDxAmsterdam simulcasts in 2010 and 2011

why not consider hosting a TEDx event in your school?
prezi is a fantastic presentation tool because it encourages less text and helps you brainstorm whilst you create
you might not know that there are free accounts for teachers and students with 400mb more than regular accounts
it can also be used by groups of up to 8 students to work collaboratively in real time
we also encourage the use of creative commons images, these are our favourites for teachers and students to use
tired of students forgetting their usb sticks or sending the wrong files by email we recommend the use of dropbox for storing files in the cloud
dropbox is also very useful for collaboration as you can share folders with other users
two great places to find web 2.0 tools
at the simplest level delicious (or alternatively diigo) is a way of storing your bookmarks in the cloud
this means you can access them from anywhere but it also enables you to share them with others

our delicous account has over 1500 websites, tools and articles saved

installing the bookmark toolbar means you can add bookmarks quickly and easily

you can give the bookmark a title and add notes
most important is the tagging - this is how you find and share later - use at least 2 tags per bookmark
searching by single or multiple tags produces a unique url which can then be shared with students and teachers

this could be done by email or by hyperlinking in a webpage

when you add more bookmarks with the same tags the url remains the same
you can also discover new resources by searching the world's bookmarks in the search box
or by 'following' specific people you know in your field
the ISA research process was put together collaboratively by library and teaching staff to provide a framework for all students to approach their work
it is printed in all student agendas and is particularly useful for long term projects such as the Personal Project
the following are questions we ask the students to think about when they are evaluating any source
these are also components required to create a bibliography
who wrote the information?
are they qualified?
do they know what they are talking about?
are they the best person to ask?
when was it written?
does it matter?
do you need a primary source?
or later summary or reflection?
is it easy to find what you need?
can you understand it?
is is biased or balanced (which do you need?)
where does their information come from?
did they publish the information? is the author...
