Formative assessment is a critical component of the Smarter Balanced assessment system,
Through the online Digital Library, teachers will have access to classroom-based, formative assessment strategies and practices that enhance day-to-day instruction.
“Smarter Balanced is committed to providing resources and tools to help teachers become more effective in their real-time, classroom-based assessment activities to measure student acquisition of the Common Core State Standards,” said Joe Willhoft, Ph.D., executive director of Smarter Balanced.

How can the Digital Library be used for professional learning?
The Digital Library includes professional learning resources to help educators integrate instruction with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with the formative assessment process. Educators can use these resources in an individual setting, learning communities, and/or professional development sessions.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a state-led consortium that is developing next-generation assessments to accurately measure student progress toward college and career readiness.

The work of Smarter Balanced is guided by the belief that a high-quality assessment system can provide information and tools for teachers and schools to improve instruction and help students succeed — regardless of disability, language or subgroup.
What is the Smarter Balanced Digital Library?
Smarter Balanced has developed an online Digital Library site and populated it with professional learning resources and instructional resources to help educators tailor Common Core instruction to students’ needs using the formative assessment process.
Educators will be able to use these resources throughout the school year to:
• Advance their use of formative assessment practices
• Better understand where students are in their learning of Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
• Identify any misconceptions
• Make quick adjustments to instruction
