Sustainable living at home
Many governments are introducing permanent rules to encourage sensible water use everyday, to manage water supplies sustainably. When storage levels drop stricter water restrictions are put in place.
Many homes have water tanks and water saving appliances.
Australia is one of the countries with the highest waste generation.
Batteries are the most common form of hazardous waste generated by Australian’s.
The most recycled items were paper and cardboard with most houses recycling those items.
Within Australia, 500,000 computers were recycled in the year 2001. (Ewaste, 2012)
Australia has energy efficient appliances
Homes are insulated
Solar power is also an option
Food choices = food miles = carbon foot print
What you can do
1. Have a meat free day each week
2. Purchase fresh, local and seasonal foods
3. Minimise your consumption of processed foods
4. Buy organic and sustainably harvested foods

•2005 estimated water consumption was 410 billion gallons per day (Kenny, J.F. et al., 2009, p. 52)
•Despite 30% population increase water consumption has declined (Casey, T. nd.)
•Grey water contributes to 75% of total wastewater flow – hence a big move to encourage recycling grey water
•Personal washing has highest percentage of household use at 33% followed by toilets at 25% (Flowers, B., 2004)
•250 million tonnes of waste per year - 87 million tonnes is recycled
•Most common sources of waste include packaging, food waste and grass clippings
•9800 curbside recycling programs nationwide

Recycling is big industry in China here are 2 videos show how recycling work in China.
China government announced the latest Five-Year Plan:
In wind: By 2015, they will finish installing 100 gigawatts and connect wind power capacity.
In solar: By 2015, government will install 35 gigawatts of solar.
In energy efficiency: By 2015, government will decrease energy use by 16% than after 2010. They also control total consumption of coal at 4 billion tons.

In China, the biggest part of urban landfill is food waste.
Food wasted annually in China is valued at more than 200 billion yuan, with an equivalent value of 80 billion kilograms of grains that can feed about 250 million people a year. (Yini, H., 2013)

Water scarcity is an issue today across India.
Water is a rapidly depleting resource in India due to population increase, rapid urbanization, and a growing GDP, supporting a growing middle class.
A new broad based water policy has been adopted in recognition of the need for a paradigm shift in broad based water conservation.
Recycling in the home in India is very much reflective of the broader political landscape in regards to attitudes toward waste. This has been to date an attitude of 'out of site, out of mind'.
An improved philosophy toward waste management is beginning to emerge and perhaps gathering some momentum, however the tide of current attitudes will take an enormous paradigm shift in order for recycling at all levels, including both domestic and industrial to be transformed.
Recycling as an industry and social need is beginning to emerge.
Urban poor in much of India are engaged in the recycling and recovery of vast amounts of waste including paper, plastic and electronics.
Sustainability is a way of life. Sustainable living at home is a way we can work towards protecting our earth. Around the world different and complex methods are used in day to day life to protect the earth for future generations. From simple ideas like sorting garbage separating waste and recyclable items to more complex worm farms or solar energy. Our everyday actions contribute to the out look of the future earth.
More than 280 million people across India do not have access to electricity.
Coal is expected to remain the mainstay of power consumption and supply in the immediate future.
India's efforts to improve energy efficiency are slow.
Rapid growth in GDP, poverty, lack of education, and the generational habits of unsustainable living inhibit rapid change.
The good news is that India is broadly developing strategies for energy efficiency which will permeate from the grassroots level through to corporate social responsibility.

Sustainable agriculture is vital to India's economy and the livelihood of its people.
Various government and community agencies are strongly supporting initiatives to encourage traditional varieties of crops and horticulture by promotion of localized organic farming, increasing food quality and saleability.
The priority must be on maintaining and improving the capacity of the higher potential agricultural lands to support an expanding population.

Whatever your belief regarding climate change, global warming and environmental damage it is clear that governments and communities the world over are working towards a more sustainable way of living.
From developed countries like Australia and the USA to developing countries like China and India the move to sustainable living, both as communities and individuals is on the rise, albeit slowly in some regions.
There are developments in renewable energies, reducing our carbon footprint, recycling waste and an emphasis on ensuring water supply for our increased population.
Initiating the movement and taking on some of that responsibility are individuals in their own homes. With so much information, new programs and initiatives and the push for a change in attitude towards our environment, for individuals to put a stamp on sustainability in the home the road ahead is no longer the one less travelled, rather the one preferred.
