Identity Who is God? Week 04 Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” WHAT IF I FAIL? The Remedy The Trinity The One God has eternally existed in perfect community with Himself We do not worship many or multiple gods Adjectives describing the Perfect Community of God Complete Satisfying Joyful United At Peace Equal Complementary One in Essence
Three in Person
Distinct in Role The Father is God but not the Son or the Spirit The Son is God but not the Father or the Spirit The Spirit is God but not the Father or the Son The Historical, Biblical Understanding I NO LONGER LIVE BUT CHRIST LIVES IN ME 3 Redemptive Implications Personal Integrity Climate of Grace Act with courageous grace Positional Sanctification THIS WEEK We will explore how the Holy Spirit empowers us to live up to our potential in Christ and how to respond when we don't Remember....God is both Incomprehensible & Knowable THIS LIFE BY FAITH 3 REDEMPTIVE TRUTHS Tip of the iceberg of
Christians' Lives "Andy lost sight of his need for the cross of Christ almost as soon as he became a Christian" The Normal Christian Life WE MUST REMEMBER This is yours if, you are "in Christ" due to Jesus' perfect life, finished work on the cross and subsequent resurrection Accepts & Loves
You Now The Work of the Spirit Magnify Christ The Holy Spirit allows us to see Jesus and all that we have and are in Him John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 15:26 ““But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” Daily Christian Living "When we think about out propensity to sin & forget about the mission on a daily basis, we see our need for Christ on a daily basis." “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13–14 Within Us. Authenticating Us. “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:11–13 Within Us. Empowering Us. The Real World The difference between enjoyment & entitlement is one GOOD way how we can determine if we are in walking in active sin The Cross-Centered Life We emphasize Christ's perfect life, brutal death, and powerful resurrection because without all three none of the other benefits are possible I AM... Emphasis on the difference between identity and calling, gifts and struggles (past and present) Our sin affects everyone we are in relationship with The "cross" is shorthand for the entire work of Christ "The cross must be CENTRAL because it defines who you are, who you are becoming, and who you will be" Your Identity: "My fundamental identity in the Cross of Christ supersedes whatever struggle I am going through now" Tension between "you do participate in your ongoing growth" and "you are never to minimize your continuing need for the mercy and power of Christ" Andy's Story The HUGE Issue ...Our Story? Yet... We still live in the here and now Repentance Faith 3 Ingredients Godly Sin Repenting Justified Adopted Proper View of God Faith & Repentance are KEYS! Many Christians fail to realize that faith and repentance are not merely the initial response to the gospel call, but are daily activities that are necessary to live a life of Spirit-filled obedience Seeing Who You are In Christ A proper view of God is necessary to overcome our pride and bring us into repentance “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1–2 Jesus as our defense attorney God cannot exact payment for sin twice and still be just. Christ paid for that in full. The reality that we are treated not as one forgiven of egregious sin but rather as one who has kept the law perfectly is AMAZING. This is a game changer with regard to how God views us “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and SO WE ARE. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” 1 John 3:1–3 You are You Are God goes from judge to Father; an astounding difference.
God's love should propel us to holiness and growth in grace "I am new, accepted, adopted and free. As a result, I want to please God" NOT the other way around! Turning from Sin to God "Real repentance means that you see your biggest problem is you, not your circumstances. No matter how difficult things may be, your deepest need is to know God and be known by God." Godly Sorrow Sin Beneath Sin Self-Righteousness “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10 In the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-30), the son saw how his sin was against the Father and against him alone...just like King David (Psalm 51:4) Seeing heart sins beneath behavioral sins Not just repenting of the obvious but repenting of acts with good outward appearance motivated by idolatry and pride “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” Isaiah 64:6 Living not in a perfected state We need a HELPER 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 1640 Westminster Shorter Catechism What is God? Question: God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and
unchangeable in His being, wisdom
power, holiness, justice, goodness
and truth Highlight a few of the Gospel Goals & Gospel Reminders Take some time to discuss last week's devotional material Fill in the blanks will be in light green All Bible references will be from the ESV Translation
unless otherwise noted Answer: Very Brief 3-Week Recap Practical Implications Three Issues The Trinity Issue 02 Through the first human (Adam), sin and death entered the world. Humanity was instantly thrust out of that community & all creation fractured until a remedy was found Issue 03 The ONLY HOPE for humanity to be reunited to God is Christ Issue 01 We are created in the image of this 'triune' God and thus were wired to live in perfect relationship with this God who has always lived in perfect community. & constructive truth Progressive Sanctification God does not love a future version of you & The Daily Filling of the Spirit Ephesians 5:15–21 “(15) Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, (16) making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. (17) Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (18) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (19) addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, (20) giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (21) submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Be, being filled (saturated) with the Holy Spirit. This is an imperative that describes a reoccurring action Take 1 family friends co-workers church The Tension of Growth Philippians 2:12–13 “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” 1 Corinthians 3:6–7 “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” This 4-Week Group All of life is repentance - Luther Essential Order: Sorrow "But when he came to himself (17)" "Against you, you only, have I sinned" Beneath the Sin Luke 6:43–45 “(43) “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, (44) for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. (45) The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Don't just mow the weeds, pull them up by the root! of Self- Righteousness “(17) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (18) And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
