THE EMPEROR
INTRO
Emperor was top in Incan society
Emperor was called Sapa Inca
People believed Emperor was descended from sun god, so emperor ruled with complete authority
Everything in empire belonged to Emperor
Servants carried Emperor on golden litter (chair)
Emperor's subjects wouldn't look him directly in the eye
ROLE IN SOCIETY
3 main classes: Emperor and immediate family, nobles, and commoners
Native Incas held higher positions than non Incas
Each class had its own responsibilities
BASIC UNDERSTANDING
NOBLES
The nobles helped govern the empire
Nobles received special privileges such as not paying taxes, land, servants and having many wives (men)
ROLE IN SOCIETY
COMMONERS
The Incas didn't practice slavery so commoners provided food and labor
Commoners supported the government
Men did labor such as building roads and women weaved cloth

The emperor's main wife was usually his sister

HEREDITY
3 main classes of nobles: Capac Incas, Hahua Incas, and Curacas
Capac Incas were highest class of nobles who were relatives of emperor and controlled land and rescources
Capac Incas were thought to be descended from the founder of the Inca society
Hahua Incas were people who gained entry into the noble class and were not "true" Incas
Curacas were leaders of conquered people who collected taxes and enforced laws
