Transcript of Commas

Commas Common Uses Brock Dunlap Use the comma to help
read large numbers more easily.
Ex. Xanthe's purse has $7,654,321 in it. When you type numbers, do not put a
space before or after the comma. Exceptions for numbers: Do not use commas for:
Year (1985)
Street numbers (19334 Beckworth Ave)
Zip codes (84606)
Phone numbers (555-5555) Use a comma between the
names of the city and the state. Also use a comma between the name of the state
and rest of the words in the sentence. Ex.
I now live in Provo, Utah, but Katy, Texas, is where I grew up. Use commas to separate a street address
from the city and state. Ex.
I lived at 1949 Drexel Dr., Katy, Texas, most of my life. Dates Use a comma to separate the date from the year
and the year from the rest of the sentence. Ex.
As of May 5, 2010, we will have 17
English class periods left.

Numbers Cities and States Also use a comma to seperate the day from the date. Ex.
Today is Wednesday, May 5.
Exception:
Only use a comma when the date is in the "normal" order of month/day/year. Ex.
As of 5 May 2010, we will have 17
English class periods left. Letter Greetings and Closings Ex.

You are fired.
Sincerely,
Management Items in Series Ex.

soccer, and basketball. Question:

at the end of a series? Names Use a comma to seperate last
and first names. Ex.
Dunlap, Brock Use a comma to seperate a
name from a title. Ex.
Jim Brown, Ph.D.
Jim Brown, President Use a comma before a coordinating
conjunction in a compound sentence. A compound sentence consists of two or more
independent clauses, often joined by a
coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor,
but, or, yet, so) Ex.
I enjoy doing math, so I
became an engineer. Use commas around words and phrases
that interrupt the flow of the sentence. Ex.
Football, which is my favorite sport, takes
strength and endurance.
My fiance, however, does not like football.
